Priority Brave Bird shits on everything weak to flying, which is actually a surprising number of things. I reckon smogon bird is the sole thing keeping Volcarona out of OU by usage.

Its going to outspeed most things anyway, all it does is bypass shit like azumarill aqua jets.
If it had its attack and speed were switched, a.k.a having lower speed, it would benefit an appreciate it a lot more than if it could already outspeed a huge chunk of pokemon naturally.

Think of it this way: if you swapped its Attack and Speed, it would've been quickbanned at the start of XY. And even then its speed still has use of outspeeding other priority users. Priority Brave Bird is a huge pain in the ass for any team of conventional fast, fragile attackers.

Not OP or anyone else previously, but I actually agree; I've never had a problem with Talonflame personally. That said, I tend to run more defensive teams than most, so I can see why Talonflame is good in a meta where people want quick battles in order to rank up sooner, using mainly fast, offensive Pokémon. My tanks and stallers just crush the thing, though.

Though forgive me if that's incorrect, maybe I'm just throwing forth conjecture.

Fighting types are out of OU because of it.
Awesome support in doubles too, not only it clears every weak pokémon, it can also ruin trick room teams or give you a priority tailwind, also people are afraid of running good stuff like Conkeldurr because smogonbird would wreck them.
So you switched to a bulky mon to tank my BB? See ya I'll just uturn the fuck out.

It actually multiplies your damage by 3/2.
People just multiply the BP for convenience. This only gives a decent representation at higher levels though. At lv100 a neutral STAB Thunderbolt would be stronger than a non-STAB 2* HP (90*3/2 > 60*2 in the common BP notation) but at Lv5 this isn't the case, pic related.

That's what I find really frustrating about it; in theory it should be crap. At the start of the gen people were going mad about it while the higher-level players seemed certain the hype would die down, but it just kept going because, despite its low stats and its ability being redundant 90% of the time, it somehow just works.

Think about it this way.
Sure its got a really fast base speed, but it can't outspeed everything.

If a player wants to make sure that they're outspeeding everything, usually for a sweep, they've got numerous tools at their disposal:
Choice scarf, twave, tailwind, trickroom, dragon dance.
Talonflame just flips the bird at all of that.
Talonflame basically invalidates any attempt to be the fastest thing on the field, being a one man stop against frail sweepers, especially flying weak ones.

And thats why its ability matters, because your opponent CAN'T stop it getting that first brave bird off.

It's all do with where the modifiers occur in the damage. STAB makes for an approximate 50% increase, seldom an exact one.

The 180 Close Combat has damage output {151, 153, 154, 156, 158, 160, 161, 163, 165, 167, 169, 170, 172, 174, 176, 178} with expectancy 164.1875
And the BraveBird/FlareBlitz has {151, 153, 154, 156, 157, 160, 162, 163, 165, 166, 169, 171, 172, 174, 175, 178} with expectancy 164.125
I know it's being pedantic but they are different. Close enough that it's acceptable to interchange for estimates though.
