So I haven't played a Pokemon game since Crystal. My family bought me a used Pokemon X for Christmas; I was interested in playing competitive for a little bit; not even finished the game.

Should I even worry about Natures/Hidden Powers/IV Training while playing the game? Have to admit it's really neat seeing how far the games have come into 3D

IV's cannot be trained. They are essentially the genetic code of the Pokemon, so you'll need to get good breeding parents for good pokemon (ie; you'll need to find someone who can give you a Ditto with 31 IV's in all 6 stats)

There's a lot of information you need to know before you can start breeding properly, but its really not all that complicated. Just a lot of finnicky bullshit you'll need to learn about. Most of the stuff required to get good IV pokemon before you can start breeding and EV training are all end-game stuff. It's really not worth doing it main game.

Thanks for being so understanding. Are there any decent guides on learning this stuff as a beginner? A friend on Skype said if I wanted to, I should at least; for fun find Pokemon I want with a natural thing for it?

Well If you want to be really picky look up a specific pokemon and look at the natures used on smogon, those are the optimal natures for that pokemon.

Some natures boost Attack, special Attack, speed, etc and many pokemon can't run both attack and special attack because they don't have the stats

Yeah, there's communities out there that are hugely into the competitive side.

Smogon is a big name one. They've got a ton of guides for beginners and a big forum. Great place to check out if you're trying to get into everything.
On their site, they have a competitive set and break down for nearly every fully-evolved pokemon in the game, and for every generation. I'm not sure what your friend meant by that, though.

Just a few starting tips:

>Every pokemon is not equal. Probably obvious to you. Some are simply better than other.

>Learn the type chart. Learn every pokemon's relative stats. Knowing your enemy is key. Once you become wiser and more experienced you can learn common sets for pokemon

>Natures are critical. They give a 10% increase (red highlighted stat) and 10% decrease (blue highlighted stat) to 1 of stat each.

>IV's, like I mentioned, are essentially the genetics. They range from 0-31 in every stat, and competitive pokemon MUST have "perfect", or all 31 IVs in every relevant stat.

Smogon looks like it has a lot of different options, is the first one the most recommended?

Also, Just got to the giant City with the Eiffel Tower, man this city is huge but some douche bag guard keeps telling me to go different ways

Well most of the sets are completely viable so if you want to choose a nature just choose one from any of the sets.

And yeah lumiose is crazy. Just follow what the NPC "rivals" tell you what to do

No, not really. You should consider your team's construction and what sort of set would best fulfil the role you want it to lead, taking care to consider any flaws.

I get a second starter in this game. Fuck.

I chose the Fire Starter for this game thinking it would turn into something similar to Typhlosion but it turns into some weird furry thing. Guess I'll just get Charmander or Squirtle and put my fox thing in the PC and never use it.

The first sets listed seem to be the most common sets, but they're not updated per usage or something, so I wouldn't look too much into the placement. If it's a bad set or too gimmicky (which doesn't NECESSARILY mean it's bad, but often is), they won't list it. Everything there is widely viable.

It's more important to know each set's role for team placement. Playing often will teach you whats common and not.

Lets say I get Charmander and this Edgy Charizard Mega thing. It says it's "End Sweeper" and advises a "Wallbreaker" or "Early Sweeper" or something.

Is it talking about the first pokemon you throw into the game at the start of a battle? What are the first pokemon you throw at the start of the match called in Smogon?

Good question.

There are different roles that pokemon can fill.

A tad outdated as it doesn't include this gen's slight differences, but more or less that explains them all.

In terms of what you send out at the beginning, well, that's actually an extremely complicated question when you start getting good.
For now, just know that your lead will depend highly on your playstyle and team structure, but the lead is always chosen with the intent of either setting your team up early or preventing your foe from doing the same. For instance, I might have a team with a dedicated Lead. Usually that pokemon's job is to be disposable, and set up tools for my team early game.
Or, I might have a more offensive based team, and I might pick my lead to counterpick what I predict my foe might lead with.

As you can see, there's basically a brick-wall of a learning curve to the competitive side. It's worth it, I swear.

I actually wasn't aware of that. I knew that the 252 was what you aimed for for maximum effectiveness, but wasn't aware that they actually changed it.
