OI was a little bit interesting season because there was no game out at the time, so the writers could basically do anything they wanted. It came about as a filler arc because GSC took longer to release than expected.

Except that one time when he did, but that was right after he first evolved. Pokemon are always stronger when they first evolve.

I wish Ash had kept using his Muk. It had such a friendly personality and seemed to be pretty useful in a fight. The only time I can remember him using it was in the fight against that super-strong Bellsprout.

That's pretty impressive for a pokemon with almost zero training. I'll have to see if I can find a clip of that. I'm curious to see what moves Ash's Muk knows because we didn't see it use any real attacks during the Bellsprout fight.

Snorlax has the best win record of all of Ash's Pokemon. The thing has only been beaten three times, and every time it took more than one Pokemon to take it down. (on two of those occasions, it swept two Pokemon in row before the opponent could knock the damn thing out)

It was actually mostly because the show got extended from "a year and a half" till "indefinitely". At the time the writers got the message to just keep writing new episodes, the Kanto arc was mostly done, so it was either a filler arc after the league or a ton of filler right BEFORE the league. Either way they needed to keep the gen 1 anime running until gen 2 came out.

See now, the Johto arc did just that...a massive, hideous pile of filler and it really sucked. Those episodes meandered on almost forever with nothing happening. You had stretches of like 20 episodes between gym battles.

It worked when you had 80 episodes to fit this into and the characters were new and needed to be established as well.
Not so much when you have 150 episodes to fill and the characters are already fully established and mostly have full teams already.

There were more problems than just that. One of them being that they didn't have enough material to stretch out 150 episodes but also because they didn't seem to care for Gen 2 Pokemon anyway and Gen 1s continued to dominate most of those episodes. Ash would always be using his Kanto starters or Pikachu in battles and two of his Johto starters didn't even evolve. Team Rocket didn't get any Gen 2 Pokemon either.

Hoenn pretty much fixed all of their problems since Haruka gave them a chance to "reboot" with a new, rookie trainer plus the entire Pokemon Contest thing provided more material to work with. But yeah, Gen 2 was boring, nobody cared about it, the Pokemon were mostly useless in competitive play. and in RSEFRLG you couldn't even obtain them until some bonus island after beating the main game.

See, if you actually played GSC you'd know that it was still completely dominated by Gen 1 Pokemon. People would have teams comprised of Snorlax, Charizard, Alakazam, Gengar and the only Gen 2 Pokes that commonly appeared in competitive play were Steelix, Blissey, and Skarmory. In that sense, the anime was staying true to the games in remaining Gen 1-centric.

GSC battling really sucked anyway, just slow, grinding stallfests.

Ash's Charizard didn't start listening to him until well into the Orange Islands arc. Even if he had flown Charizard for the remaining islands (Charizard can only learn Fly in Yellow in Gen 1, supporting the potential of Ash flying it), he would still have already had Lapras by the time Charizard would have been prepared to fly him. Plus I doubt Charizard would be big enough to carry Ash, Misty and Tracey.

Not on his back though. They had a Charizard blimp carriage, which they got from Liza. While they probably could have got one on the Orange Islands, given Charizard's previous behavior at that point most people would probably rather go in Giovanni's blimps than risk their lives with an uncontrolled Charizard.

That's a useless feature since Jumpluff already resists Ground attacks. All it does is give you an unnecessary Ice weakness.

Jumpluff is a typical status inducer. It has minimal offensive capabilities and its main asset is high Speed. Flying does help keep it safe from Fighting Pokemon who would otherwise pound away (literally) at its weak defenses. On the other hand, it's incredibly weak to Ice moves and has only average SD. The main use for Jumpluff is to put something to sleep or paralyze it and get the hell out of there before they send a Fire or Ice move your way.
