So if doubles was always the official format, how exactly did Smogon rise into dominance among the competitive community?

Smogon has been around since Gen 2 back when Netbattle and GSBot were the standard way to play online and rose to prominence in Gen 3 since there was no real official format back then or general ruleset.

It doesn't help Gamefreak are quite frankly shit at making their own single player campaign with double battles being rarer than a anorexic eating food so most forget that fact.

Smogon (now) is just a bunch of fascist retards, and their popularity is just that, they rose to prominence at the right time, pretty much like Serebii...
And even though there are millions of sites like it, it's their mindless sheep's fault that they do as they please regarding bans and rules.

Smogon has some good rules, like Sleep Clause, that the game doesn't implement (although Stadium did)

I don't agree with all of their policies, but they're the best of the worst. It doesn't help that they're trying to balance a game without any control over what gets put into the game.

I don't know maybe people like different things? I personally find singles more fun and Smogon has the best rules out for singles at the moment. I hate how the majority of them suck the council's dick, but I can't help that. Although to be fair VGCfags can be just as bad, the Nugget Bridge forum is full of shit players that hate everything having to do with singles like it raped their mother.

Doubles is just the official format because it's a lot easier for GF to balance(or in their case, a lot less easy to completely unbalance) without actually doing what Smogon has done. Knock Smogon all you want but pretty much every ban and rule they've added has been for the best.
