The idea of Pokemon being as intelligent as toddler is kind of funny in general.
The only reason we don't have Kadabra BTFO'ing everybody in StarPoke II or Aggron Commander is because we are playing/watching/reading series for kids in primary school.
If pokemon were into common sense, most of humanoid, especially psychic pokemon wouldn't have any problems with communicating either by some writing, or telepathy.

Btw any intelligent being can, if it wants, learn any existing language.
Moreover, it also can pass that knowledge to further generations.
So, if we had smart Ralts (or another pokemon clever enough) with dedicated trainer, it would easily learn to communicate using any language, either by writing, telepathy, Morse code or sign language.

I repeat, if target audience wasn't bunch of ignorant kiddos, speaking mons wouldn't be so rare.
And you could spend nice evening playing Risk with your Slowbro

That sounds a lot like Digimon though. Let me tell you why that's bad. Digimon is all about an intense bond between the person and their one digimon creature. They are partners and friends and comrades.

Pokemon is about catching them all. It's about collecting ALL the animals. You can't suddenly have them able to speak to you and become close friends, because then it's like putting your best friends into prison and herding them around like cattle.

Which, incidentally, is why Pokemon behave more like cattle than humans.

Instead of friends, nay, even pets, we have cannon fodder.

It's a symptom of the game's structure, rather than the world. We see time and again in Pokemon media, the Anime especially but also the manga and even NPCs in the game, where humans DO have an intense and important bond and comradeship with one or a small handful of Pokemon. Not everybody in the Pokemon World gives a shit about "catching them all". Honestly it's just those ones near the Professors that even end up doing that kind of thing.

There's so much room to have a game where your goal ISN'T to catch them all. Where you're doing something in the Pokemon World that's not helping a Professor. Where you do things other than battle battle battle catch catch catch breed breed breed battle battle battle like a fucking robot soldier.

There's a room for other aspects of the world to be fleshed out and developed, but GameFreak never ever will.

Octopi are pretty damn smart, but I don't know any octopus poets.

Also, "pokemon don't speak human languages because it's a series for children" is kind of a weird argument. Kids' shows are full of talking animals. The fact that pokemon never speak human languages (outside of rare exceptions in the anime) makes it MORE grounded in reality, not less.

You know "pets" are an extremely modern concept, right?

I mean, humans domesticated dogs thousands of years ago, but they weren't seen as "friends" or "companions," they were tools. You used a dog to protect your herd, or to help you hunt. Nobody bought a dog just to have a dog. And that's STILL the case in most of the world. The idea of keeping animals as a "member of the family" would be a completely alien concept in rural parts of Mexico, for example.

I doubt it.

The thing about cephalopods is they're quick learners, but they have basically 0 long-term memory. So for example, you could teach an octopus to open a combination lock, but within five minutes it would forget the combination.

A huge problem with the games is that the main focus has always been capturing, fighting and trading. There have been a lot of chances to give options to people such as contests or Pokeathlon but those are always one time features that never come back. Breeding is never seen or recognized as a real job but only as a side thing aimed at competitive people.

Hell, every game has been "hey kid, get this Pokedex and fill it for me. Oh yes, and become a trainer and aim to be a champion". Nobody asks you what you'd like to do as a job, where you'd like to live, what you'd like to be when you grow up. You realize it probably is a lot of strain and stress for the main character who has to deal with crap he probably was never interested about in the first place.

So, Pokemon-meets-Terraria would be among things we want. Seems nice to me.
But still, the biggest problem is that we will have to wait long, since currently franchise is targeted at ten and younger kids.Which partially explains simplicity of plot, or much of the lore.

Well, even LoTR started as a book for preschoolers, we can have hope.
