The Black Mage was presently driving an old german jeep through the snow to who the hell knows where, following what appeared to be a reformed nazi to prevent an evil clown from destroying the world. This was a situation he would never have imagined he would come to.

Driving the jeep with the magic of science was his Porygon2, CALLED. Wonderfag, his Spiritomb, sat in the back of the jeep alongside Mike's Absol, Cassandra. Following behind BM's jeep at the back of the lineup of vehicles were the Dark Warriors, who were clearly up to no good. Not that it meant much; they would probably be more help than harm whether they were trying to be or not.

Mike was as nervous as ever, having to take a seat in the back of the vehicle he was in. He was used to such things, at least when he was a kid; just like old times. Only Sophia and Leila were with him, the respective Gardevoir and Wigglytuff having to occupy the same seat due to lack of space. "Well, that's good, given that it's about ten degrees out." Maybe colder; he wasn't sure exactly.

Mike glanced behind him out the back window. "...Hey, wait. Weren't there supposed to be three of these things on the road?" For some reason, he thought he saw only one other car behind them instead of two. What was going on with that?

The three Kubelwagons took to the snow just as well as they had been designed to, coasting along on their flat undercarriages just as Hans has said they would. The air outside was silent, save for the rumble of three small German jeeps over the mountain snow. The sound of old German marching tunes filled the lead vehicle, with Hans occasionally chiming in with a piece he was familiar with. Alas, one can only listen to the same Heino songs so many times, and even that was silenced after a time.

After what must have felt like an eternity to the passengers of jeep number one, Hans slammed on the brakes, signalling for the two other vehicles to do the same. "This is our stop" he said, turning the engine off and stepping out. "Everybody out."

In Wendy's case I just meant being late to work as HR as failing.

Gio's kid fucked up in more ways than battling, he was pretty good at that until he decided to get on the wrong side of the Brat-of-the-Hour. That was the biggest mistake.

I've got a water type. I don't specialize in them.

A part of the incoming troupe split off not long after the convoy resumed its trek, and that seemed also too good to be true. Though where that other car went to was definitely cause for concern, he'd go ahead and let the snipers and reserve elements deal with that. They were almost certain to be wary of an attack incoming, but how prepared for it would they be, really?

The road would start to curve upwards slowly as they got closer to the ruins and the ridge it was built on the other side of. The incline did not steepen much, but the snow made it more treacherous, and the road seem to be oddly bumpy, causing the jeeps to rock and jump as if they were driving down old cobblestones.

Their wheels would also be causing crunches and pops from underneath as they drove, perhaps over broken ice? If so it was quite sharp, chunks of it would scrap paint and windows...and people, if they hung kept their hands out of the sides.

Hans would not remember this route being so treacherous.

At about the same time that he made that realization, was when the ambush that was waiting in the back of their minds would be launched. A soldier dressed in heavy boots and fur-liked parka twirled a matte black detonator in his fingers, abruptly ceasing this gesture and slamming his thumb down on a singular button.

For a brief second there was nothing but the roar of the engines echoing off the valley walls, and then there was the roar of explosions. Fire and earth were thrown from remote charges lining the road for dozens of feet ahead of, behind, and under the convoy, all detonating in sequence.

To make matters worse, not only were huge gouges blown from the road too big for the cars to handle - sinkholes were opened that blocked the road ahead and behind for vehicle traffic. If they weren't careful driving, they might go into one - if their vehicles weren't flipped.

Roads go ever, ever on, over ice and under cliff, or something like that. The three in the Kubelwagon had the luxury of a gentle incline, which meant they could drive to their destination. However, that gentle incline was open and exposed, meaning that if Hans' ruse had been discovered, they would be vulnerable to attack. The way back was shut, and the only way forward was on foot.

With the cars demolished step one of this plan was already complete. They'd now have to take the rest of the route on foot, and that would not be a very fast endeavor.

As the group, and especially their pokemon, would find out as they stepped out of the cars, those rocks and all that 'ice' they were crushing up earlier was not so benign as originally thought.

This particular strip of road was chosen because it had been pre-seeded with stealth rocks and maxed spikes and toxic spikes. While the humans would probably not be affected by the former, they would by the latter. The sharp, metallic prongs were buried in the permafrost and jutted up like bared fangs. Removing them would be difficult. As well, snow launched from the explosions came down in an emulation of freshly fallen. It was greasy, clung to their clothes, and burned the nose if inhaled. This 'snow' did not seem healthy.

"Welcome to the party!" A voice called out, clearly above, but his position remained concealed. "I heard you had bested some friends of mine. I'll be sure to repay the pain, with interest!" Bakura may remember this voice.

Numerous spider holes, literal spider holes, opened in the valley walls high above them and to either side. At least a dozen galvantulas poured out onto concealed ledges and began to lay into them with sticky silk that crackled with electricity. Being electroweb was an AoE move in general, you can see how much of this was coming down. They sought to utterly trap them here.

Mike was caught off-guard by the Colonel's choice in Pokemon. A giant metal snake, here? Now? It didn't make it any better that the attack of choice was... "Jeff, return!" Collateral damage would have been massive, possibly even a KO.

"Let's go, Gaspar!" Mike had switched out his Magnezone for his Gengar at the last second; the ghost type was unaffected by such moves as the Steelix was about to use. The rocks would still dig into the ghost, but the spikes wouldn't touch it.

Mike had such a panic going through him that it was only now that he noticed he himself had gotten the sharp end of a Spike. Jeff had managed to absorb the majority of the Toxic spikes, but the remainder of them would mean his team all took quite a bit of damage from the hazards. Sophia and Leila were particularly vulnerable to the poisoned trap, being Fairy types themselves; Mike would have to spend the next few rounds on damage control. [No attack this round.]

The other two switch without incident. The third one succeeds as well, and the attack rocks the ground. Some things readily become apparent.

Those tunnels were well fortified, dug by inhuman hands and secured with materials that enhanced the strength of the sturdy mountain rock. Even so it was still super effective, and that meant it would do some work. Chitters and screes droned maddeningly through the valley during and after the attack. It was hard to see how many of those bolt holes had collapsed, and how many spiders were beaten - doubtlessly some were just rerouted. Even so EQ was the most logical choice in this instance so those attack points were spread out to minimize overall damage. IE, no one hit ko across the board. But the incoming fire did seem to lessen.

"Not bad! Do it again!" The soldier called, blanketing the valley in more shocking web. He himself stepped into sight now from a crevasse well out of there reach, holding in his hands a number of pink vials. "Let's add some spice to this fight!"

As that was said, he hurled the vials at the group to smash amongst them in stinking pink mist that stained the 'snow'.

Then he reached for his radio and clicked it on. "Pain to base. Give me a round of P-1 shells. Danger close, we're ready!"

Again a wave of spiders, another earthquake would have been the better choice of moves. But the bugman wanted a show of speed, and so a show of speed he would receive. Steelix began to rotate its segments in place, turning each slab of jointed iron into a whirling dervish of fury. When they had reached their maximum rotation speed, Steelix loosed itself upon the spiders with uncanny speed and fury, smashing itself in the general direction of their ranks, using its very body as a weapon.

Their enemy had certainly left them in a tight spot, hadn't they? Gaspar wasn't vulnerable to the ground-based traps, but he would be open to the army of Galvantula. The Electroweb that had been laid down certainly reinforced that, the entire team struggling to fight through the electric shock.

"Gaspar, come back!" Mike made another switch? What was he doing? Was he going to waste the whole battle doing nothing but switching in and out, and getting his team run through the wringer without even putting up a fight?

...No, of course not. "Mira, it's your turn!" The Gengar that had just been out was replaced by a Starmie; it could clear out the remainder of the hazards plaguing the team. In the meantime...

`Whaddya want us to do?!` "Grab the medicine, Sophia! You, Cassy, and Leila are going to have to treat yourselves!" `Got it!` The Gardevoir and Wigglytuff were starting to feel tired already, with the Absol being little better. They might be able to hold on, though, if they could just get first aid.

The detachment of Mortars who had followed the Pain to the Ambush had set up some the mortar teams that had been deployed to support the Pain's counter attack quickly readied their load outs upon The Pain's Command.

This move was actually quite terrifying and effective because it brought the fight to the ambuscade more directly. Suffice to say, no one, pokemon or otherwise, enjoys having a gigantic metal snake pin balling around their frontline. The valley made that particular effective, in fact. The serpent's mass smashed into walls, gouging out fissures and sending bugs flying with impact as the trainer watched from higher up.

"Look like this isn't going to be easy after all!'

With a few waves of his hands the spiders changed their game. Of the 12 left, 4 went to each of the pokemon out. At the gengar - starmie, another switch, and articuno they lobbed more shockweb. At the steelix, they threw balls of crackling, green energy. Significantly more efficient. Or at least 1x efficient.

As the spore cloud came slamming down the heroes would probably realize that this valley was a bad place to fight, because this noxious air would sit down here and keep plaguing them.

What's worse is that the Pain threw out a pokeball. It burst open to reveal a fiery pokemon that Bakura would also recognize.

"This one's payback for a friend of mine! Make them really suffer, whirlwind that starmie!" He called out, as fierce winds began to buffet the rapid spinner in hopes of making it duck out...and make someone else ram into the spikes.

Mike suddenly dropped to one knee as the poison began rushing through his bloodstream. At this rate he'd be out in a minute or so, unless someone got to him with any sort of antidote. Not to mention he was losing quite a bit of blood through the spikes in his feet; he had to remember to keep those in unless he liked bleeding even more. The Whirlwind had failed to dispel his plan, so maybe there was a chance. "All right... Colonel, you're going to have to trust me on this one." Mike didn't often give orders like this, but he had little choice. He'd seen the Stun Spore cloud, and how it affected no one on his team but Mira; he'd have to trust that she could do the job. "Mira... Attack the Colonel's Steelix with Rapid Spin!" If all went well, they'd be free of entry hazards; anyone else coming in would be at full power.

Sophia and Leila had finished treating themselves with Full Heals; the next round would be getting to Mike and Cassandra. None of the ones who had been hit by the toxic hazard were feeling well, but they'd live.

There were a few problems in this fight that Hans had not taken notice of, until they, quite literally, began raining down on him. The toxic spores caused him to choke, and as he stumbled backwards, he was sure he felt the needle pinprick of one of the spikes driving itself into the back of his leg. Really not good. Coughing and in pain, Hans didn't notice the intent behind Mike's attack, leaving him confused as to the other's rather... Odd, choice of attack targets. But as the Starmie collided with the massive iron snake; as the shock-wave from the impact blew the surrounding hazards away, Hans saw what his comrade's plan had been.

Stahlos certainly didn't seem to mind, taking no notice of the fact that it had just been rammed into by a friendly. Its armor was thick, and the strange pile of leftover garbage that I probably should have mentioned earlier it kept in its mouth and chewed on occasionally made sure that any damage taken from the attack was nullified.

That fire moth, on the other hand, Hans knew that would pose much more of a threat than the spiders. "Stahlos, ignore the spiders and attack the moth! That's the one you need to worry about!"

Stahlos looked up to the sky, eying the incandescent insect like a predator to its prey. "Bring it down!"

Roaring, the beast dug its tail into the rock, hewing out a massive boulder and flinging it towards the Volcarona.

With Mike's quick thinking the numerous hazards dotting the battlefield were scattered, clearing most of them out and allowing them to swap pokemon around without risk of harming themselves. Never a bad thing.

As well a massive chunk of rock was sent careening skyward into the fire bug. It rolled with the blow, an experienced fighter to be sure. The gusts of wind that followed, however, did little; the bugs retreating back into their caves until the hurricane had subsided, doing little more than rattling their cages.
