ITT we share our unpopular opinions about Pokemon and try justifying them

Mine is that i still desperately want a Kanto remake/revisit. Everybody and their mom is probably thinking either "no more remakes", "no more kanto" or "DPPt remake pls", but i still seriously think Kanto is the only game right now that truly needs a remake. Diamond and Pearl stand on their own two legs as a decent game, but FireRed and LeafGreen felt outdated and lacking-in-features even back when they were new.

I'm not actually sure where this sits but I dislike the change from 2D/sprites, including overworld.

Maybe if all the areas were in 3D and battles didn't lag I'd like it, I mean everything just looks so flat.

If they do make a Kanto remake they would either have to add a fuck ton of new content or have it so you go to Johto once you beat the Kanto league.
Having Kanto to Johto instead of Johto to Kanto gives them the opportunity to fix the absurd level scaling which almost ruins the 2nd half of G/S/C/HG/SS for me.
However, I still think that Kanto is the game that needs a remake the least, Gen 1 always felt like the incomplete version of Gen 2 to me, a remake of the incomplete version is kind of stupid, especially with the way GF is now.
A remake of Gen 1 would feel like an incomplete version of an incomplete game.

Exactly. That's precisely why I want a Kanto remake - so they can add enough content for Kanto to finally stand on its own feet. FireRed and LeafGreen were a wasted chance to give Kanto the glory it deserves, rather than Kanto and Johto being horrible, co-dependent conjoined twins

I don't actually believe you really think this. There are some pokemon that are so incredibly lazily designed one can't help but think how anyone could look upon them without disdain for the effort put into it by the artists. Trubbish is a good example. A bag of garbage could evolve into, say, a dumpster or recycling bin. But no, it turns into a bigger bag of garbage. The Vanillite line is also inexcusable (I will pardon the Gen1 mons, i.e. Grimer -> Muk due to the graphical limitations).

By modern standards, Kanto would be horribly bland as a region, and no graphical uplift would change that. Either it would suck, or they'd have to change it so much that it'd be barely recognizable as Kanto any more.

I want to say yes because of trainer customization among other things, but I hated Kalos as a region and can't remember anything about it except Laverre, Camphrier and Kiloude.

Gen V was the most consistent good designs. Every gen has its gems and its dogshit but gen V had the most gems.

Platinum didn't add a lot of features, it just added a lot of fixes.

If they ever remake the 4th gen, you better bet there will be Houndour, Ralts, and Magnemite in the wild.

The single player experience has gradually gone downhill thanks to story bloat, handholding, linearity and a much slower pace.

HMs are great, they just need to be used properly. Having cut paths near the start of the game to make the player wonder and then allowing them to come back and explore is great, just needing it to progress isn't.

Gen 2 had the best new batch of Pokemon.

The best Pokemon gens are the even numbers: 2, 4, and 6.

They did more to actually improve upon the franchise. They all had a good balance of new Pokemon and old favorites, while giving the old Pokemon new evolutions and Megas, and they added the most important new features and mechanics.

Gen 2 added things like held items and day/night, added two more types, a few evos of older Pokemon, had an after-years Kanto, and overall felt like an expansion to Red and Blue. Gen 4 added the essential physical/special split and online play, and had many more cross-gen evos. Gen 6 added the Mega Evolutions and the Fairy type, as well as character customization, Pokemon Amie, and Super Training.

By comparison, Gens 3 and 5 just feel like shitty attempts at reboots that didn't actually change anything, sweeping old Pokemon under the rug and replacing them with obvious expies like Blue Pidgey and Red Caterpie.

Gen 3 at least added Abilities, Natures and Double Battles, but then made us suffer through water-and-trumpets land. Gen 5 added even less, and overall felt like it could've just been skipped over entirely.

I loved the fuck out of Kalos, the whole Paris feel, little things like cafes and boutiques, and seeing Mega Evolution and character customization for the first time.

Black and White 2 would have been a near perfect game had Unova not been a Final Fantasy XIII-tier tunnel

The best thing for the franchise at this point would be to release a darker, more mature game with access to about 650 or more Pokemon from the start of the game. All past features would be included, like contests, Pokeathelon, Pokestar Studios, the PWT, Battle Frontier, etc. Said game would be another Kanto reboot with a Johto postgame.

A game with every region included would be godawful unless it began in a new region.

Completely agreed with the first two points.

To add, I think people oppose HMs mostly because they are really shitty moves (with a few exceptions) that cannot be deleted, which forces people to run HM slaves if they don't want to ruin their movesets, which in turn limits their team choices etc.

I don't believe there is anyone that would want LESS exploration in a Pokemon game, especially after the abominations known as the Unova and Kalos regions.

But the thing is that the games are remakes. Back in gen 3 that was the Hoenn dex cause there were <400 Pokemon back then, and many weren't even available cause you couldn't trade from gen 2 to 3.

It should have been after the 5th gym, gives them a chance to show off the lackluster Hoenn pokemon, and a chance for routes to be more than Zigzagoon/Mightyena and Wingull/Tentacool

I have no idea what /vp/'s opinions are on the issue of plot/story in general, but this seems like a thing that could piss some people off so maybe it's appropriate here:

The goal of each game's story design should be to have as few mandatory cutscenes as possible.
Gamefreak wants to put backstory/lore stuff in? great. have a book lying around or an old man in the corner of some building or something that has information for me. lore is coolest when it's discovered, not when i have to listen to unpleasant characters rambling.
friends and rivals? get-in, get-out rival battles. if they want bonus character building scenes, have people standing around in public places to talk to and trigger events.
evil teams? give me just enough info to understand why they're assholes.any extra info about their plans can wait in the corner til I decide to check it out.
and for the love of god, don't talk about how special and unique my character is ever again.
