The history behind it is actually extremely disturbing. Back in the Middle Ages they would burn witches, adulterers, heretics and the like because they believed these people were so vile and evil that they had offended god himself. It was believed that they deserved to experience the unimaginable pain and suffering of being burned alive because they were unholy and even less than human in some cases. They would burn them by strapping them to a stake atop a pyre and they would place bundles of sticks, or faggots as they called them, at the base of the pyre to act as kindling. Now at the time they believed that homosexuals were not only vile and evil beings that should he burned for their sins against god. gays were seen as so awful, so wretched, and so unholy, that they could not be human, not only were they less than human, they were soulless creatures worth even less than animals. Gays were so worthless that they did not even deserve their own pyre to be burned upon. when witches or heretics were burned, the gays would be bound and then placed at the base of the pyre along with the faggots because kindling was the only thing they were seen as good for. That is how the use of the word faggot to describe homosexuals originated.
