Has anyone else been bullied in school for liking Pokemon? Back in the 90s I remembered getting shatted on for playing the games and watching the shows, I wasn't even autistic about either.

eh, i graduated high school by the time FRLG came out. people were still into it as a video game, it just became less a phenomenon. I got bullied for other things, but nothing a little retaliation didn't kind of fix as well as broke.

OP here, I remember having a handfull of friends who were all into Pokemon. We used to be teased all the time because of it, got to the point where one of my friends had enough and dropped Pokemon all together and joined in on the bullying.

I lived in Kansas during the rise of pokemon, everything takes a while to catch on here.

Really wasn't until 2000-01 that pokemon was everywhere here. It was like every other fad; some liked it, some didn't, no one really bothered each other over it outside Wichita.

I was a tomboy when Pokemon first came around. I got really into it, and hardly any girls were into it as much as I was. No girls I went to school with. So girls were always mean to me, before and after Pokemon, and would pick on me because I hung out with mostly boys. I was mostly into the cards than the games at that time. Almost every boy was into Pokemon, and like one anon said, people got picked on for NOT being into Pokemon. Girls were so terrible to each other, not only to me. I guess at that time I felt it was more toward me because I didn't have any girl friends.

What gets to me now is that every basic bitch seems to be into Pokemon all of a sudden. Even the chicks that used to pick on me in elementary.

Something about it really made it become one of my fav. pokemon movies and a movie I'd go back and watch again and again. Yeah, it was more complicated than being harassed solely for liking Pokemon, but Pokemon was one of the things that could socially ruin you around middle school. I still played openly for a short time during middleschool when the sudden hatred of the franchise erupted out of nowhere, but the damage was already done even when I stopped playing openly. The little bastards latched on to whatever they could to give me problems.

It sucked pretty hard. One of my favorite hobbies somehow became a source of a lot of stress and disappointment. I ended up quitting the league and stopped collecting cards because the fun aspects of it sort of died when there was no longer any sense of community. This along with the inability to transfer led me to ragequit at gen3, although I did eventually return over half way through gen4.

Elementary school (up to Gr.8) everybody loved that shit. Absolutely everybody. It got so big the school banned it.

High school, I was a somewhat funny person so I got away with lots of shit, but people really didn't care. For fucks sake, I actually had manga in my locker I would read during lunch; we had huge tables so it was around 15 people on one side and 15 on the other. My friends would be across from me and on my left and the people who were on the basketball team, student council, or the more hardcore nerds on the right. We all joked and laughed together and shit. Even all the Koreans from other schools. One even saw my manga and was like "we couldn't read that back home until few years ago" and stuff.

I went to a Christian school for a year or two, not Catholic it was some other nomination I don't remember the name of, and only because the public school in that area was so much worse, so glad we moved away.

Anyway I was going there when Pokemon hit the area and being the only person there to even try it I got picked on for being a "Devil Worshiper", teachers even called my parents to the school to have a meeting because "my eternal soul was in jeopardy".

My parents actually are Christians but even back then thought all the "Pokemon is the devil" people were fucking crazy. So they just agreed to do whatever so I wouldn't get expelled then took me to Dairy Queen to help take my mind off of having to deal with those assholes that week. They never actually did anything the school suggested.

At least that's the story they tell me, all I remember is going to Dairy Queen and buying Pokemon cards right after.

There was that phase in 8th-10th grade or so where it wasn't cool to like it at all and even mentioning it evoked the most McCarthy-istic responses from everybody around you. Growing up in elementary school, they would confiscate and throw away your cards. I remember we built a wicked ass snow fort once and play cards out on top of a makeshift cardboard box table in the fort so we didn't get caught. Shit was maximum comfy.
