The only bad looking ones for me are:
Altaria - Wish it'd fly without wings, I loved thinking that it just floated like a cloud and the sprite actually helped me picture it.
Arcanine - It does look more "fat" than in the sprite, and the sprite is just boss.
Blastoise - It just doesn't seem as cool and ready to pound your ass, unlike the sprite.
Tyranitar - Fuck if anyone likes it's 3d model over it's sprite.
Venusaur - It just needs to be green, not blueish.

I honestly like most. But I can see where you are coming from, OP. Also, why the fuck did you have to shop Tropius's 3d model that horribly?

I VASTLY prefer the sprites since they were so dynamic and filled with personality. What would Gen. 6 have looked like with sprites animated to the max in a 3D environments?

If it's not Genius Sonority 3D, then it's really not well done 3D models and animations. GS gave Pokemon personalities even when idle; they weren't just static washed out blobs.

It would be better appreciated in a higher resolution IMO. With Cel Shading you can adjust the levels of shadows you want.
Personally I prefer 3D models, because it grants many features in animation that couldn't be done with only sprites.

I hated DP so much for the shit sprites. Gen 3 had much better looking sprites, especially from the back. They were WAY too zoomed in from the back. I also don't think DP were even animated. HG/SS and PT were better, but still suffered from the core problems. Thank god BW finally fixed it, in fact it's still my favorite graphic style for them.

I'm just mad we are going to be stuck with these at least until gen vii. I'm hopeful they make pokemon exclusive to the new 3ds, or to the 3ds successor so they can at least be as detailed as the 3d pokedex app.

Salamence is the worst. I nearly picked a Bagon up in AS since I had one back in the day, then I saw a trainer with a Salamence.
I mean the model is actually fine I guess but the way this fearsome looking dragon soars 2 inches above the ground, it just looks retarded as fuck.

It's a selling point for the handheld itself, yes. But not all games utilize it or want it as a selling point because it's pretty shit.

These models weren't even made from scratch for XY either, a huge chunk of the models and idle animations are copy pasta'd from the 3D Pokedex app they made a few years ago.

I think in another thread like this, someone pointed out how they had to dull the colours just to make the 3d models work. Something about how the lighting works on a model, which moves and alters, rather than a flat sprite.

It's like people didn't watch E3 last year.

The coloring is only for the game, the actual model is actually well detailed. They showed a sample of it in the Noivern model.

It's not really cellshading, it's more a complete lack of any shading whatsoever.

Also the animations for most of the pokemon are generic and dull, I remember some of the older mons had a personality in the older 2d games, and now they just stand there like they've been lobotomised because it was too much work for the animators because they just wouldn't hold still.

Wh-what have they done to you Blastoise? Wh-why is there a drill sized hole in your eye? Wh-why won't you stop drooling? ;-;

They're not agressive because they're idling. Sprites couldn't change during fights, so the artists had to find a good blend between action and rest so they could work with getting hit and attacking, which should normally be complete opposites. 3D models can move, so they reserve the action for when they actually act. I agree some poses aren't as good (Xatu shouldn't be flying, they should start making the standing models from amie work with battles) but they were trying their best to exploit their medium as good as they could. What bothers me the most is that they'll probably never go back and give other pokemon even half as many animations as more popular pokemon like pikachu. Have you seen the list of pokemon you can high-five in amie? Fucking biased and they'll never do something about it.

All those 3D models look substantially worse than the sprites.

That's not to say they look bad - they're good for a first attempt, I suppose. They all have bloated poly counts, bad shading, bad posing and a lack of definition though.
