Who said anything about gen 1?
I'm saying that gen 5's story tried to go out of the usual formula and do something more elaborate, but it just comes off as awkward.

Story has never been a big part of Pokemon and probably never will, so the Gen 5 games left me with mixed tastes because it seemed they put too much focus on it.
