So for my next playthrough of Omega Ruby I won't be using the Exp. Share, will it actually be challenging or should I implement some other self-imposed challenges like no healing items or repels or something?

You'll end up even or sometimes even above level until after Winona.

By the time you get to the e4, you'll be around 49-52

I went

-No EXP Share
-No items in battle
-SET battle mode
-Avoid all possible trainers
-Never kill wild pokemon
-Full team of even-leveled pokemon

It was still extremely easy. I lost a couple of times to the E4, then swept Steven with a Ninjask.

I like to roleplay.
Actualy i has playing emerald on a "gym leader run", using only one type.
all NO mono dark, fighting or steel make this a thing.

Or just make a NPC run, pick a random npc and use only pokes that he/she uses.
>youngster = only roedents/route1 mons
>fisherman = only fish-like mons
>etc...

Avoid all trainers where you can and constantly switch out your team.

Maaybe you won't be too overleveled by the end if you play like that.

I did Exp Share off and raised six Pokémon equally throughout the game. Aside from catching things, I never spent any extra time in each area once I had explored it fully and beaten all the trainers. By the time I got to Steven I was maybe in the mid 50s. It depends on your definition of challenging, I guess.

If you do the above, you won't get Blaze Black/Volt White difficulty but it also won't be XY-tier either.
