Fire everytime because there are tons of Grass and Water pokemon and they are always available pretty early while there are less fire pokemon and they appear later in the games. Shit I remember gen4, if you didn't pick Chimchar the only fire pokemon you could have before beating the game was Ponyta.

I guess that's true, but to me that's just more reason to pick fire. Fire beats grass and bug, two types that appear often throughout the games but especially near the beggining where you mostly fights wild pokemon in grass/forests and lots of Bug Catcher trainers. Fire also beats Steel and Ice, two types that tend to appear late-game, so it keeps being useful. Water and Grass, I never feel the need to have both since they have near-identical coverage, so I just get a water pokemon since there's plenty of them available early and you need one for surf. The only thing grass has over water is that it beats water, but typically the only water pokemon you fight early on are Magikarps from fishermen, and you only fight masses of them once you get surf, by which time you've most likely have been able to get your hands on an electric type, which cover water and flying.

I've used every one except for the gen 6 starters, Tepig, and Snivy.

But my favorites are Squirtle, Cyndaquil, Treecko, Turtwig, and Oshawott.

However the best to build a team around is definitely Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, Piplup, and Oshawott.
