bulbasaur destroys most of the gyms and the elite four, and also destroys or is resistant to soooo many normal trainer fights. squirtle doesn't really have that kind of success, and most of what bulbasaur can stop is what wrecks charmander

probably as a result of this, in rby competitive, venusaur is in the tier above charizard and blastoise

again, venusaur is also considered better in competitive. rby is the gen where story performance actually kinda means something, never mind speedruns or whatever

how the pokemon actually fights is the only real metric for this, they're all equally good otherwise. the only starter i've ever disliked is treecko for some reason

Venusaur was more useful competitively
Venusaur>Charizard>Blastoise
mostly due to Razor Leaf crits
though I preferred Charizard because having a fire type was nice

As a matter of fact, Charizard doesn't learn Fly in Red and Blue. It learns Fly in Yellow, but that's a game where you get Charizard anyway.
