Anyway, I don't think it'll overthrow the series. It'll come close, and probably push GF to do some interesting things, but I think we're fine.

It's sales are pretty good looking the first weeks but then disappears, while Pokemon It's sales like in X/Y situation places on the first places of the chart if not the first many moths after it's release.

It's a great alternative but it's a long road from there to calling it a rival.

Pokemon was a mix of those designs plus other things, and its world setting and lore have nothing to do with Japan. Sure digimon was set in Japan in terms of characters but the digimon themselves were based on a mixture of things as well, and having their own separate world made things easier.

Yokai Watch hits a lot of references and lore that only a Japanese person would get/know normally due to their culture. Overseas people would see shit as some Naruto/Pokemon/Yugioh reference rather than a throwback to folklore.

I've seen the rest of the yokai monster lineups and they are...hmm...more folkloric than Pokemon for sure. Yokai will just be another corpse once Pokemon has it's way with it. Just like all the rest.
SMT is really the only one that has survived against Pokemon on the global market.

I thought the concept was neat. Dig up fossils and revive them to battle other people. What turned me away from it was that there had to be some sort of really bare bones story between it all. I mean, it's not a bad game, I just can't sit through it to get to the good parts.

No, they're both just drawn from cultural depictions of foxes. Even the golden color is intentional, nine-tailed kitsune are said to have golden fur. There's one story of a white-faced (or white-masked) golden-furred nine-taled kitsune. I'm not especially familiar with Youkai Watch, but that kitsune looks just like a depiction of Konjiki Hakumen. The face is also pretty similar to a kabuki fox mask. Saying it's a ripoff of Renamon is like saying Renamon is a ripoff of Keaton or the other five billion kitsune.

I think it reminds me of that other DS game, Spectrobes, in which you revive fossils which are monsters and you fight some "big bad" alien invading. It was mediocre but I do love games in which you can tame some sort of monster and fight with them.

Did South Korea just recently get it? I saw some videos online showing the anime being aired on TV there and them getting the toy of the Youkai Watch... at least it got to one other country so far, m-maybe we can be next!In a strange way though, I liked how exclusive it was/is, it's motivated me to start self-studying Japanese finally.

I played the ds one back when it was new, but unfortunately the L and R buttons on my ds had crapped out by then, so it was impossible for me to play. I had to borrow my brother's shit just to play it, so I didn't get very far.

My friend that's been living in Japan came back for the holidays. She said it was insanely popular over there. The dance is extremely well-known and used for morning exercises. Children at a school she was teaching at even did a presentation for her doing the dance and singing the song for her. They have quite a few events for it, especially at festivals. She showed me photos of inflatable jumping castle-like things that look like the Nekomata yokai.

I predict it is going to go the way of Monster Hunter - popular in Japan, not enough drawing power to achieve a global success. Westerners are just going to write it off as another Pokemon rip-off and move on.

He wasn't misinformed and Ishihara was the game's producer. Plus The Pokémon Company didn't even exist back then. He only reconsidered the idea to stop because Gold and Silver were selling faster than Red and Green after their release in Japan. Game Freak also received a lot of requests for new projects.

Also, Youkai Watch has zero appeal to anyone over the age of five. The Pokemon anime has actual story, conflict and characterization, while YW is just the bland MC going through his regular school life with a bunch of generic kids while talking with the mascot youkai. Also, the retarded songs the youkai sing when summoned are absolutely cringeworthy, not to mention the potty humor.

Yokai is bigger than Pokemon in Japan, this is an objective fact.
Yokai also has a huge problem that won't let it become "big" elsewhere: it's a super-Japanese game in every single way.
All the monsters are Japanese-folklore inspired. It takes place in a super-Japanese town filled with super-Japanese characters. The battle system is directly inspired by the super-popular "arcade battle-system" that is heavily reliant in fast reflexes and luck.
