I'm not saying I'd have liked to grind affection in amie to mega evolve either though. Instead I'd have rather had each stone requiring some kind of "quest" that makes you learn interesting trivia about that species of pokèmon, and also each mega evolution to require some sort of trigger in order to happen.
For example, some 'mons could only go mega if they used a specific move like a signature one, but a less OP of a move than Dragon Ascent. For example, Blaziken could only mega if it landed one (or possibly more) blaze kick, and so on.
Other mons could only mega if they got hit by a certain type of attack, and maybe some others even only when a certain species of pokèmon is on the field (Pinsir and Heracross would be a fun duo in Doubles, for example).
And there's also the good old "be in yellow/red health to unleash your power". Of course, depending on the requirements some mega could afford to be more broken than others.
I think it would have added an interesting layer of strategy to battles. Is my opponent gonna fumble around with strange requirements to mega evolve (and if so how can I prepare myself) or will he rather just fight with the regular form?
