inb4 "hurrr charizard fag", yes I am, he is my bro since I was a kid, hate however you want, Greninja is pretty badass in Smash 4, and Torterra is based in one of my fav mythology

but just because some of the starters are in the last 5 doesn't mean I don't like them, I just really dislike Emboar, the other ones are just my less favorites

Chesnaught is objectively worse than Delphox though.

At least Delphox broke a hated Fire/Fighting streak, which redeems it. Chesnaught broke a beloved reptilian grass starter streak. That is unforgivable.

Typhlosion without the fire looks like a fully evolved Normal/Dark regional rodent. With the fire it just looks like a bigger Quilava.

I wish Fairy type was called Magic type and Delphox was Fire/Magic instead of Fire/Psychic.

Greninja's tongue should at least froth up in certain animations.

Oh, forgot to mention I actually do like almost every starter. The only one I legitimately dislike is Samurott. So just because something's in the lower tiers doesn't mean I hate it, just that I like others more.

Also, switch Emboar and Sceptile, now that I think about it.

None of the starters have all across the board looked good to so many people since gen 1. If you disagree, you're just plain old fuckin wrong.

Why? The starters in gen 1 were thoroughly focus group tested by nintendo to make sure kids could bond with the character's they're going to be using all the time. Nintendo was investing a lot of money and advertising into this game, they needed to make sure it was as popular and memorable as they could get. They are developed, simplified designs with enough differentiation that kids feel validated in choosing between three pokemon in a way that they have the feeling that they are unique for their choice, but at the same time similar enough so that they don't feel the pang of buyer's remorse once they've made their choice.

I doubt they've done that since at the latest gen 3, and even after gen 2, they never really needed to make sure kids liked what they were seeing as they were rich and successful enough by that point to be able to ride purely on hype. That's why you get bad, unbalanced designs like delphox, overdesigned ones like emboar, and 3 generations of fire fighting. I don't think any pokemon generation or starter line up has ever been bad, but gen 1 was designed well purely out of necessity, and every game since has just copied the formula of the 3 starters, sometimes to a fault.
