Have aged much better than Gen 1, but still have many flaws. Could be said that they're only played due to nostalgia as well.

Aside from "TOO MUCH WATER" memes, they've aged great but Emerald is the go to game here with both teams storylines and Battle Frontier.

Carbon copy remake of the originals. This is the go to game if you want to play the originals but not have to suffer the broken mechanics.
>Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
Diamond and Pearl are only played now just to play them. Other than that, Platinum is SO MUCH BETTER. So many problems were fixed, plus better regional Dex, and the return of the Battle Frontier.
>HeartGold/SoulSilver
Johto is nearly a carbon copy of the original but things are much different when you get to Kanto. You can play the remakes or originals and not miss the too much. Battle Frontier included.
>Black/White
Typically considered to have the best story of any mainline game in the series. Regional Dex is Unova ONLY, great music and such. Still a good game
>Black 2/White 2
First direct sequel game in the mainline series. Great game, new music, includes Unovan pokemon while also including fan favorites. Pokémon World Championships is there and it's a great nostalgia trip for any long time fan.
>X/Y
Great game by any standards. Only introduced 70ish new Pokémon which can be a complaint but the regional Dex makes up for it. Story is a huge step down from Gen 5,but then again this is Pokémon. Introduced Mega Evolutions, and 3D graphics.
>Omega Ruby /Alpha Sapphire
Sticks mostly to the same formula as the originals. New features such as Soaring, PokéNav gets an overhaul, and terrific OST. No Battle Frontier as of yet but introduces Delta Episode plus A LOT of legendaries to catch.
