>>224028061. gen 1 was the most innovative, laying the base for all Pokémon games and was a huge upgrade higher from games of its time. All other Pokémon games can be seen as a disappointment after this since it is just more of the same in the same exact structure (3 starters water, fire, grass, professor, "rival" or friend, 8 badges, E4, champion, etc.)
2. Gen 4 with the physical/special split, the most important addition for Pokémon battles.
3. Gen 3 with abilities. Double battles deserves a mention, other battle formats are basically not important and serve as variation, so are double battles, but they are the official VGC-format. Single battles are still the most important though.
4. gen 6 with megas and Fairies. Megas are a decent addition.
5. Gen 2 with genders and Dark/Steel types. Types add variety, but they do not add anything signifant to the gameplay, that is why gen 2 is ranked rather low when it comes to innovation. Genders are also unimportant for the most part.
6. Gen 5 basically added nothing. 2 battle formats which are unimportant were added. Failed gen 1 pandering, easily the worst.
