there's a sylveon spread in the last thread to survive jolly kang, ev aegislash to survive specs hydreigon dark pulse, and not sure about milotic but main focus will be in defense as that's its weaker stat. think about what powerful physical attacks people are likely to use against it and try to survive those.

i use a calm milotic with 244 HP / 140 Def / 36 SpA / 84 SpD / 4 Spe
it survives adamant double-edge from mega kanga, which is a tad stronger than megamence's, and survives timid mega sceptile's leaf storm, and has a decent chance to survive if modest. OHKOs normal salamence and has a great chance against megamence if they didn't invest in special bulk, and if they trigger competitive it's a sure OHKO no matter the investment. and the speed because i had some extra evs i couldn't put anywhere else

I just wanted to have a little more bulk. As far as I see, the spread doesn't miss any significant KOs and Outspeeds Jolly Garchomp by two points (It would be one point, but then there are 4 wasted EVs).

yep ranked doubles on battlespot is the format. good megas in vgc off the top of my head: kang, salamence, metagross, charizard (y is mainly used and the better one for vgc but a few people used x in 2014) , mawile (better in 2014 than now imo but still viable). those are probably the biggest at the moment, but there are other megas that are viable (or were in 2014) like lucario, manectric, venusaur, camerupt, gyarados, gengar and probably some others i'm forgetting right now.

In general, is a team based around a central strategy such as Trick Room, Rain, Sun etc stronger than a team with no core strategy and just 'goodstuff' pokemon?
Or is it case-by-case and impossible to say, depending wholly on the matchup and skill of the pilot?

Spot on. There are not "stronger" and "weaker" team archetypes here. Any type of "archetype" can go far with good teambuilding and a good player handling it.

Well, in the case of Rain, it's usually win hard or lose hard, cuz most of their mons rely on on rain, but a good rain player knows how to weave their Politoed in and out and has another way to set rain.

But yeah, as long as you have more than one "win-condition", that team can be successful.

anyone else catch the Blue Bell PA premier challenge stream today? Angel Miranda won with a team using follow me clefable and special non-mega swampert with wide guard, pretty cool. that and some of the other battles that got streamed gave me some new ideas for team building, definitely recommend watching streams for people trying to learn more about vgc

If you don't want to get the 6 IVs, ignore the IV Stat for the defense that you're lowering. Go for 31/31/31/31/x/31 since your SDef is going to be shit anyways.

So, I changed my team a bit and made it to 1750+ but unfortunately I'm in a bad streak and went down to 1640+
I mean, c'mon, who the fuck uses TIMID Choice Scarf Hydreigon? Apparently all in the 1800+ range.

So anyway, I've been looking into trying a unique Follow Me/Rage Powder user since Amoonguss hasn't been fitting on my offensive teams lately. Tangrowth was the one that caught my attention, it's very physically bulky so it can take hits from Kang/Bisharp quite better and it has a stronger Giga Drain + things like Knock Off/EQ. Is it worth using like it sounds, does anyone have experience with it?

I do, its not hard at all. I take a simpler approach to offensive mons (usually 252offensive stat/252speed/4hp) unless I have a really good reason to customize the spread (if it truly doesn't need the attack to achieve its OHKOs/2HKOs or it doesn't need all the speed, which is common on scarfers.) On defensive/bulkier mons just think: what is this pokemon doing? what speed tier should it hit to fulfill its role on my team? what common hits should I EV to survive? what offensive benchmarks should I hit?

Charizard is fine, especially paired with Landorus.

Landorus only needs 212 EVs in speed to outrun M-Manectric with Choice Scarf without wasting EVs. Pour the rest in HP for a little bulk.

I don't know how to build Ludicolo so you're out of luck there. However, it is a good rain counter as far as I know. Play around with the damage calculator to see what benchmarks you want to hit as far as offense or defense goes.

Give Bisharp Focus Sash. Honestly, Life Orb seems good, but it wears down an already frail pokemon. It comes down to personal preference, but Focus Sash just seems more practical.

Then it comes to down Lucario and Cresselia. If you want to keep Lucario (its physical variant) then switch out Cresselia. Togekiss also handles your Conkeldurr problems, as long as it isn't carrying Poison Jab/Ice Punch. It also provides redirection via follow me to let Lucario evade Will-O-Wisps and provides speed control via Tailwind or Thunder Wave. Let me give you a build I just came up with.

Togekiss @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
Level: 50
EVs: 236 HP / 236 Def / 36 SpD
Bold Nature
- Air Slash
- Thunder Wave/Tailwind
- Follow Me
- Roost/Protect

Play around with its EVs spread and moveset however you like. Its current spread turns AV Conkeldurr's Poison Jab/Ice Punch into a 3HKO...provided it doesn't have Sheer Force or a Guts Boost. The choice between Roost and Thunder Wave is a choice between offensive potential and consistency. Roost is immediate recovery vs Protect as...well I don't need to tell you what protect does. Also, this Togekiss also has the luxury of turning Life Orb Talonflame's best attacks into 3HKOs.

I think your Talonflame problem is mitigated by having Landorus on your team anyways.

As far as Rain goes, I think Charizard is already a good counter with Drought upon mega-evolving. Really, just know when to switch Charizard in and out to mitigate Rain.

Cresselia and Camerupt are pretty good as a pair. Cresselia sets TR almost every time barring Taunt. You can look at Aaron Zheng and see his Camerupt team on his Youtube Channel. Hairyama is a pretty fantastic Trick Room abuser, but can work outside of it thanks to its bulk and fake out potential.

Also, I do want to give a special mention to Gothitelle and Hariyama as an effective duo, showcased by Zheng this year at Worlds. Gothitelle can set TR, and Hariyama can OHKO most threats to Gothitelle not named Thundurus (Thanks Prankster Taunt), but Fake Out can mitigate it or even a Mental Herb. I don't remember the spread Zheng uses, but here's my mine.

Hariyama (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Atk / 56 Def / 60 SpD

- Close Combat

140 Attack Evs is enough to KO Mega-Mom with Close Combat. Guts to bait Will-O-Wisps. You can use Ice Punch over Rock Slide to hit Landorus/Garchomp/Salamence, but Rock Slide is nice to have for Talonflame (on the switch) or Charizard.

Lake Trio, to my knowledge, isn't that great. Maybe Azelf as an attacked, but there are better options. Did you want to go Full Trick Room or Semi-Trick Room?

Sylveon naturally tanks a Flash Cannon, iirc. Even without any investment.

EVing around Kang is pretty much never a bad idea considering that, well, this is VGC and you v. Kang at full health is one of the most common scenarios you'll see.

Another thing you might want to consider is adding enough bulk so that you can survive anything M-Salamence throws at it, because Salamence is NOT gonna want to eat a hit from Sylveon.
Jolly Double-Edge and Adamant Return are targets you can survive fairly easily and even an Adamant Double-Edge is possible, but you'd have to sacrifice like half your SpAtk EVs.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 204 HP / 164 Def / 140 SpA
Bold Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Protect/Morning Sun
- Overheat
- Snarl/Helping Hand

It can take on some strong physical attackers with this set. The choice between Snarl and Helping Hand serves two purposes. So pick whether you want to help you partner nab KOs or to lighten both sides of the attacking spectrum. I only put Morning Sun up there for a means of recovery, but it's not that reliable with all the weather out there not named Sun. You can replace Leftovers with Sitrus Berry if you want more recovery. Overheat is there so your not complete Taunt bait and you hit as hard as possible. Still it does net a KO on a 252 HP/ 4 SPD Mawile.

This isn't the best build and I think there are better ones out there. Just play around with this build on the damage calculator to suit your needs.

If I were to clone up a bunch of things (good IV legendaries, hard to get mons (like hidden powers), or just fully trained ready-to-go mons) and give them out to people here in /vgc/, would any of you be interested?

And more importantly, would you help "donate" pokemon? I'll clone it and give you back the original of course.

I won't edit anything (change nature, IVs, etc) so everything should be "clean", if that makes sense. Battle spot doesn't care about them, and if you feel weird about not battling with things you bred yourself, they'll still be good parents.

Hey guys, I've been doing calcs for the EVs on an Assault Vest Empoleon, and this is what I've got so far: 144 HP / 188 Def / 76 SpA / 100 SpD.

It tanks Megamom's double-edge, Specs Hydreigon's draco meteor, Mega Charizard Y's Solarbeam, Rotom-W, Thundurus, and Zapdos' thunderbolt as well. It also survives Landorus and Garchomp's earthquakes, and manages to ohko back with ice beam. Is there something I might've missed or I should tweak?
Also, I'm not really sure on how I should divide the EVs between both defenses and HP, I'm fairly new to working with calcs. I appreciate any help.

The problem is, when I feel the need to bring both Camerupt and Slowbro, that's why sometimes I changed the Ice Beam for trick room, so even though it can't goes mega, it can still act as a setter.

Any suggestion of replaceable mon/moves in this team combo? The reason I choose ferro-bro-rupt is because I'd rather stick to conventional FGW core, and bringing two potential mega will be an advantage in best of three game.

Oh, don't bother with the EV spread, I'll try to optimize it later.

Cresselia feels kinda redundant when you already have two different setters and plenty of other mons with ice coverage too. I'd say switch her for something that can work out outta trick room so you can pull your weight during those times more easily.

Healer is awful and so is Wish. Replace those with Aroma Veil and perhaps Helping Hand so you can keep that after replacing Cressy.

This is my personal preference but drop Calm Mind on Slowbro and put Ice Beam there but if it works for you then keep it that way.

Ah yeah, I also feel that, the reason I put plenty ice moves is because I don't like doing too many switch and wasting TR turns. And for the replacement, I'll go look for it, does using scarf user is good?

For Aromatisse, sometimes I use wish when TR about to running out, so before it start setting again, it'll come back to good health. The reason I use healer is because many people don't bother taunting when Aromatisse is on the field, and healing Slowbro out of unwanted burns is convenient.

Ok, I use calm mind to increase scald damage while protecting against Slowbro shitty spdef, while hoping for scald burns. I do feel fine for it. Thanks for the input.

Presumably the idea is to set up Calm Mind before a special attacker can hit you, so being able to completely wall physically is useful.
Of course an optimised spread is better, but it's not surprising for showdown to recommend that.

Cybertron's Sylveon runs 92 HP and 116 Defense to survive Jolly Kang Return. The total EVs used for that are 208, when the same goal can be met with 12 HP and 176 Def, which is 188 evs.

There are many variables and combinations you can try. Perhaps you want to make your Sylveon speedier so you invest the bare minimum to survive that hit while it outspeeds other threats. Maybe you don't care about speed at all so decide to make it more bulkier overall. It all depends on your needs.

You can also EV to more than just one specific hit, there's nothing that says you can't do that.

Anyone see any glaring weaknesses that I can't see? I like the AV Mirror coat combo but I don't get to use it super often (suvived a char Y solarbeam and OHKO'd it back) so I've been wondering what to do instead. Also I'm not sure if my EV spread is all that great. It's meant to outspeed adamant bisharps and brelooms. Also I can't decide between drain punch and PuP. Drain punch is nice but I feel like PuP is more important on a jolly kang.

For Kanga PuP is good, I wouldn't use Drain on a set which doesn't invest significantly into bulk. Low Kick is another option for more immediate power against other Kang

Is Porygon-Z at all usable as a scarfer? It gets trick to ditch the scarf, Icy Wind for speed control (probably not worth it if I'm bothering to scarf as it can't KO Mence without Ice Beam or Blizzard) but that lack of bulk is a little iffy, and Normal STAB isn't the greatest even with Adaptability.

It's like xRazeOvation. His commentary can be annoying, and he talks too fast, but he made entertaining Battlespot content, because he was pretty bad at predicting at times, and his teams were pretty flawed. But when he added a face cam, I just couldn't watch it anymore.

I've got a powersaves too, and I've only used it for cloning so far, besides testing the IV codes. For some reason changing IVs feels a lot more like cheating than cloning does.
It is frustrating that there's basically no reason VGC would have stricter hack checks than WiFi (assuming it's even possible to detect IVs edited with powersaves) but I still wouldn't be comfortable taking anything edited to a tournament.

Yeah, I've been getting connection errors in about 1/4 of my matches recently too
And 1600 isn't that bad any more. Back at the start of XY you wouldn't get a serious challenge from anybody below 1700, but the standard of play seems to have improved a lot in the last year.

What about EVs?

I think Lopunny is kind of underwhelming. It doesn't hit hard enough unless you use HJK, which is really risky, and it's really frail. Have you tried mega Kanga instead? It sort of fulfills the same role but it's way bulkier and can dish a lot of damage.

LO is generally better on talonflame, it's dying anyways and it's a bigger boost on both flying and fire moves
I also prefer overheat to deal with mawile, but that's more preference
Fake out and protect on the same set is generally a bad idea, you could probably use the slot for more coverage
HP ground is better on sylv than hyper beam imo, it gives better coverage even though it doesn't allow it to nuke as well
meowstic is a lot less impressive this gen with things like thundurus running around, and I honestly think that there are better pranksters out there.

Change Talonflame to Life Orb. If you're bulky, even Charti Berry might be worth considering.
Jump Kick on Lopunny is kind of pointless. Sure you're not going to miss like with HJK, but you'll be crashing a lot more from targetting Protects anyway.
As the last guy said, Kangaskhan is a good alternate. I've been having some success with Lucario too, although it doesn't get Fake Out.
Consider Rock Slide over Stone Edge on Salamence. Scarf means you have a 51% chance of flinching at least one opponent each time you use it.
Sitrus Berry is usually better than Leftovers in Doubles

I'd say a lot of your Pokémon are a bit too 'offensive support'. Lopunny's best thing there is that it fakes out, Talonflame will often be struggling between supporting or attacking, and if Rotom is mostly being used to attack, it would probably prefer Modest.

Both Crawdaunt and Mega Sableye are niche Pokémon that have alternatives generally better, but not exactly the same. You can make teams around them, but they're not gonna be very common.
Mega Sableye will probably be more common than Crawdaunt, it's pretty good, just not one of the most common megas. It helps that it's useable without mega so it's not completely predictable.
