I loved the Pokémon Yellow (although I've never finished it when I was a kid) and the gen 1 anime.
Now I got the Pokémon Y and I kinda like it but there's so much Pokémon and "strategic stuff" it's fucking tedious. I am unable to make a good team and I generally suck at it.

On the other hand the game made me curious about the Pokémon canon but I don't know where to start. What would you recommend to read/watch/...?

Elaborate please, are you talking about ingame or competitive battling? Because ingame you can do whatever the fuck you want and competitive battling is a clusterfuck of everything.

Not sure what you mean by this. The main part of a Pokemon game (Gyms, Elite 4) tend to be not very challenging for the most part. The place where strategy really comes into play is competitive battling with other players/postgame "battle" areas.

Almost every game is self-contained, aside from the odd recurring character from a previous generation. It's simple; there's really not much to it.

I struggle to beat my 11yo brother and I get my ass kicked every time I try to battle online.

Bro, if you've only just started playing again since Gen I, you're not going to be good at PvP.
Just start by learning the basic mechanics, like type matchups and shit, you'll get better over time.
I've been playing pokemon on/off for 2 years just casually, but I know enough now to be half decent competitively just from that. Just enjoy the single player and get more familiar with the mechanics of it that way.

But yeah, like the other anon said, IV breeding but especially EV training is a big deal when it comes to pokemon. A fully EV trained mon is going to be much more powerful than a non-EV trained one.

Thanks. I'm probably just going to try to enjoy the ingame and then I'll look into this IV breeding/EV training thing.

Maybe the biggest problem for me is the number of Pokémon. I don't know which one to choose and I'm affraid I spent too much time training a shitty, weak Pokémon.

In-Game, using so-called "shitmons" is totally ok. If you hear a poster on this board, they are probably referring to the competitive scene or trolling. Choose what you like, be it cute or badass and try to balance a team that can beat most type combinations.

Not really, actually. For me, I usually don't use the ones I hate for one reason or another, or don't like the design of. Just test it out. Some pokemon have weird gimmicks, some are straight-up attackers.

If you see any "Hall of Fame" threads on here, you'll see that many in-game players beat ORAS with the typical Dragon types, thier starters, etc., but some get a lot more creative with their teams. For as much criticism as this board has given X and Y, it has a good mix of Pokemon from every generation, so you shoupd be able to find something you like!

tl;dr, if you see a 'mon you like, catch that motherfucker and see what it does

Luckily, once you learn how to do competitive battling (the tools that some other posters provided you are really good, actually), Gen VI made things like breeding and EVs easier, so even a retard like me who stopped playing after Gen II and got back into it at the tail end of Gen V can compete! :^)

It's not at all difficult or time consuming to train up levels in postgame these days, and once you get to the stage when you want to create some truly competitive pokemon, you're going to have to train them from eggs anyway.

Actually, if you can't be arsed to do all the breeding and trading but want to play around with a competitive grade team, lurk the giveaway threads here on /vp/ until you have a good set of mons. I'd keep them seperate from your own 'legit' stuff, mind, and only use them for competitive play. It's more fun to use your own mons ingame (and in PvP, it's just that it's time consuming to train competitive mons).

This. Seriously, the best way to play the game is to go in with no idea what your eventual team will be, and just use things that look cool or interesting as you encounter them. Absolutely nothing is unusable in-game.

Stalling is probably the hardest out of all types of teams to play, because not only do you have to plan your team incredibly rigorously to have no holes, you have to be able to outpredict on every single turn, you have to be able to go 50+ turns without choking once, and if you lose a single pokemon to a bad play, you might as well call it quits if the opponent is still at 6 pokemon

Like other anons have said, play whatever team you like in-game. Just make sure you've got a team that can beat the E4/Champion's types at the end, because I when I was a dumbass kid I'd rock up with a team that would get totally decimated.
