You're forgetting that Japan has always been sexist as fuck. The "eye candy" thing doesn't surprise me. Over there, a woman who gets married is treated like crap and won't be allowed to make *any* progress on her career after that point, and is expected to become pretty much a full time, uncomplaining servant to her husband.
