You should have seen /vp/ during the XY hype period. There were people saying that mega evolution was shit but those threads would just be filled with people defending it. This attitude pretty much stayed until ORAS was released.

That's what people did after they saw the Masuda interview though. And the reception was always mixed. In December 2013 (when the hypefags had left), the reaction to mega evolution was overwhelmingly positive.
