Not true, GF didnt give a shit about balance in gen 1. Dragon wasnt even going to be a typing but GF changed their minds in the last second, making dragonite the only dragon type at the time. Otherwise Charizard and gyarados would have been dragons since gen 1

I thought i read this somewhere as well, but the reasoning for it was because the only damaging dragon type move was dragon rage, so gyarados would have had no weaknesses in gen 1, so they changed it to flying.

Dark can still hit fairy for NFE damage, making crunch deal moderate damage to the fairy switch in and a KO with the waterfall follow up. Also, Dark moves on average are a lot better than dragon, especially since dark can hit through steel types unlike dragon.

Also, the real reasoning for it becoming a dark type was so that way every generation had a pokemon that represented one of the 18 types (Gen 1 didn't have a dark representative until Mega Gyarados)

I'm saying if it was Water/Dragon, it wouldn't be weak to Electric (Dragon Typing) plus it would be weak to Ice (Water Typing) And it wouldn't be weak to Rock either.
But since it's Water/Dark, it's weak to Electric and now Fighting and Grass, those last two typings it didn't have a problem with before.

As for the last part of your sentence, let me add this for you. Keldeo is quite the check to mega gyarados, so yeah the water/dark hurts gyarados there, but would you rather be weak to a single pokemon or would you rather worry about azumarril and ferrothorn?

Ferrothorn doesnt resist crunch, so at least gyarados has that. If gyarados was water/dragon it would be completely walled. As for azumaril, a crunch+waterfall coming up will pretty much KO the azumarill, if it switches in that is. otherwise yeah gyarados is toast

Keeping that in mind, isn't the Mega evolved Gyarados going to be an absolutely unstoppable wrecking ball? Wouldn't that make it more of an Evil-type than a Dragon-type, in terms of attacks?
