It gives us a lot of people and resources to draw from, but it also means that there are more competing points of view, and it's tougher to effect any particular change because it requires a greater number and diversity of people to agree to something. Yes, many other nations are ahead in many ways. By and large, they're much smaller, homogeneous, or both. I think that's not a coincidence.

Ten years ago? Much, much less. Prison reform? Well, I think that it's only recently that a lot of people are realizing the scope of the problem. There's already been some minor progress in terms of sentencing reform, and I think that things will pick up more on that in the near future.
