I looked at it as they tried to make the characters more human, instead of the over-the-top style the comics and shows had.
Bane was still this strong, big guy, who carried out the plan with ruthless efficiency. And, just like the Bane of the comics, he was never the mastermind.
Talia was still a schemer, and still got the Bat-D.
Catwomen was eh, but that's mostly because we never got any development from her, besides this 3rd movie.
