>>22445148I think a some of the hate towards her is overstated, but I agree 100% with people who claim she's an annoying, whiny hypocrite. The problem to me wasn't really the conception of her character but just how BW was written in general though.
Thing is, her being a hypocrite is kind of the intent. She was supposed to be a 10 year old girl running around saying everyone else is a kid even though she's clearly one herself. It's supposed to be cute (imagine that in real life, it'd be adorable), but the way it was handled made her unlikable instead. I attribute this to the fact that the Pokemon characters have always only looked 10 but never really acted like it until BW, so it was really offputting to long-time audiences (they even changed the artstyle so that Ash looked shorter and more boyish looking). If they had replaced Ash maybe people wouldn't have cared as much.
The other problem was that BW had a really bad habit of running every single joke it had into the ground. Belle being annoying, Kenyan's name thing, it's tasting time etc. They've had running jokes in the past, but they were handled way worse in BW because you'd see the same joke being repeated 3 or 4 times in the same episode. In Iris's case, her calling Ash a kid multiple times per episode just makes her come off as being annoying instead of cute/teasing.
