Thematically it's a good combo. Dark was introduced paired with something else in Gen 2.
Light would be a more apt term for Fairy types since they're based on it anyway, Sound would diversify the pool of Normal types even further. Balance would be easier to maintain with two types to work with, since Steel types are still OP and Poison types are still shit.
As for the OP's question, Psychics were just what the "cutesy mystical" pokemon were categorised under when they weren't normal types like the pink blobs, since it was the closest type to supernatural. Fairy Type basically managed to free up the psychic and normal pool and make all three groups more defined.
