How many people here have played PTU or PTA? Not really too into Table Top games like D&D, but I've been working on a campaign for a Kanto/Johto world with a main line quest similar to the original Team Rocket saga, but I'm finding trouble in ideas on how to fill the world to make it less like the linear shit that Gamefreak sticks by. The friends I have that would play are more traditional Pokemon players, and I felt this would be the best way to snag em.

>Side quests
>Pokemon events and gifts (besides the traditional Eevee, Hitmons, Lapras ect.)

Make Kanto open world.

I had a PTU game that was pretty baller, was pretty much vanilla Johto, unfortunately it died shortly after the party got to Azalea.

Honestly, the thing that I felt was the most fun with the system was just the ability to do shit you really couldn't do in the games. Things like type-shifted Pokémon, using trainer classes to make unviable Pokémon beastly (I was a player and managed to turn a Farfetch'd into a OHKO machine using the Underdog class and crits), at one point we came across a trainer with a robot Bulbasaur (didn't get to battle it the first time we met him and the game died before we met him again but I'm pretty sure it was gonna have a lot of weird properties), the game was short but great and I wish my tabletop group would go back to it or start another one.

Maybe if you're playing a caster. D&D is so poorly balanced I refuse to touch it.

Trying to find a way around that issue too. I'm even going to kinda tweek the game a little. To where if say one of 5 people are busy, the other four can continue. Open world.. dice generated quest??

I used to run Pathfinder and Edge of the Empire for a few friends who have become busy, but I've got a small group who may be very interested in this.

I don't know a thing about any pokemon tabletops, so I'd assume you're sticking with the first two gens. If so, I'd reccomend revolving it around legendary mons like most of the movies. Always had an idea for an actually competent villian that had just abandoned Team Rocket because he/she didn't like working under Giovanni's thumb and split off to steal stong mons and use them to hunt legends and use their OPness to become champion.

Have you ever watched the Pokemon Anime when you were a kid? There are plenty of ideas there to give your game world depth. I also suggest reading the Pokemon Special Adventures manga. The setting in that one is similar to the anime, but battles are far more lethal and pokemon and their trainers can actually die or get horribly maimed. I think Special Adventures captures the feel of PTA quite well, but combining elements of the anime and manga is quite alright too. Also, encourage your players to use their pokemon and their moves in creative ways in the same vain how Ash uses his.
