Everybody's always bitching about how the core Pokemon games are shit now, how much the 6th gen has fucked up the series, how there's no post-game

You wake up as Junichi Masuda, and you're in charge of the next 6th gen Pokemon game, which hasn't yet begun development. You've got the same crew of people under you, and a similar time/budget as Pokemon X/Y so you can't go overboard (inb4 "let us travel to every region")

What kind of game do you make, /vp/?

X and Y, but I wouldn't have announced it so early. Up to the third gym or so, the pacing is really good, but it falls apart after that. A little bit of extra dev time would have allowed gyms 4-8 to feel as fleshed out as the first 3.
Also I'd change some of the megas but that'd take too long to explain my reasoning

The main game would be relatively lightweight in its presentation - the evil team would have a bare-bones plot, legendaries would scarcely make an appearance. You can do the gyms in nearly any order - each gym has a lot more trainers than normal, all of whom (including the gym leader) have different pokemon and different level scaling depending on what order you take them on

the game would basically be ALL postgame/sidequest though. The region would be packed to the brim with areas like the Power Plant, Cerulean Cave, Whirl Islands, Ruins of Alph, Sea Mauville etc - areas which are completely optional but provide rare stuff, side plots, and lore-building. Once you beat the Elite Four the game would expand majorly, with a Sevii Islands-esque postgame area (but doubled, at least, in terms of land and content), a wealth of battle facilities (including successors to the Battle Frontier and PWT), secrets to find in old locations and so on

pokemon right now is a linear path campaign leading to a deep, dark hole of a post-game. i want both the campaign and the post-game to feel like a real adventure, with much to see and do. HGSS and B2W2 came closest to what im looking for

a wii U battle frontier game which you can send your pokemon to. it has classic frontier with 7 facilities, the 3 added ones from gen 4 and 5 brand new facilities to make the total 16.

it interacts with all gen 6 games and has amiibo support. the biggest change is now you can enter all facilities with a friend. imagine exploring the pyramid, or choosing between 5 doors in the pike with a friend to tag along!

step 1: make a list of things people liked in previous generations: customization, follower mon, battle frontier, etc etc.

Step 2: make a list of things no one likes, maison, handholding, etc.

Step 3:Instead of randomly axing or including features on a whim, make a game that includes the things that people like, and excludes the things people don't like.

There are many time-based events much like HeartGold/SoulSilver, as well as the return of seasons. Certain holidays would yield pokemon and NPC interactions

Being a console Pokemon game, it's absolutely packed to the brim with battle facility-esque modes, including successors to the Maison, the PWT, Pokemon Stadiums' modes and all of the Battle Frontier facilities we've had over the years.

Also it needs at least all of the online/connectivity features of the 3DS versions, and then some.

basically i want a spiritual sequel to the Stadium series, but with way more battle modes, online functionality that proves nintendo isnt stuck in the stone age, and an overworld to explore/catch pokemon (even if it doesnt have a plot to speak of)

Stop dropping good features for no reason other than "this should be exclusive to a certain region".

Allow the player to switch difficulty levels right out of the box. The smartphone kiddies get to breeze through the E4 as they wish, and the players who want a bit more bite to the SP campaign also get what they want. Don't tell people to play the postgame if they want a challenge and then give them a Maison with the exact same teams they already beat.

Bring Kageyama back and have him fix Kalos' shitty battle themes, oh my god.

This probably has nothing to do with fixing the main game as this thread implied, but the next game would finally introduce changeable background options for wifi battles. I always found it lame how Aurous is the only pokemon that can make use of Nature Power since the move on paper would benefit allot of pokemon if the battle backgrounds were changeable (Earth Power Typlosion in a Desert background or Draco Meteor Mega-Sceptile in a Space background). VGC obviously wouldn't allow backgrounds to be changeable since it has it's own special background. And to make sure you wouldn't get confused how the Nature Power user used a move that isn't Tri-Attack, team preview would now show the background your opponent is using while you can still use your own chosen background.
X/Y and OR/AS would now have patch updates of these new wifi features just to work alongside the next games.

That's a lot of time and money for just fixing a broken engine. First of all, I'd spend some of that time working purely on fixing the XYORAS engine so it doesn't run like shit and can achieve 60 FPS. If Smash can do it on a 3DS, there's no reason that Pokémon can't.
Once that's been achieved, plan out the region. Sufficiently large with enough semi-secret areas that reward exploration with either nice items, money or Pokémon, but aren't necessary to complete the main game.
Pacing between the gyms would be similar to the pacing between the first few gyms in XY. It'd be a trek, but hella worth it.
Once I'd laid out all the trainers and gyms and everything - including a Dark type gym, of course - I'd make a hard mode. Trainers have more, higher-levelled Pokémon, plus better AI.
Exp. Share would be back to the original Exp. Share, with Exp. All being a post-game upgrade.

Given that timeframe, I don't believe I'd be able to tell the team to optimize the engine, so I'd focus on filling that shit with content like the BF, a few new areas to explore, return of seasons, more clothes and hairstyles (especially for guys, they got buttfucked in that aspect), expanding the areas the game already has, giving the gym leaders a semblance of characterization, expanding on the lore, giving Team Flare some actual admins, addition of a ramped up challenge mode right from the start, filling that shit with postgame content and maybe some stuff like Emma's Missions, like going on patrols at night, solving some mysteries and so on.
Also lick Shota Kageyama's boots to make him compose the champion battle theme.

Just let the new trainer visit a garden with around 50 Pokemon in it. All random stuff that evolves at least once. Shit like Machop, Cubone, Treecko, Skorupi, Psyduck, Totodile, Ralts, Electrike, Swinub etc would be nice.
It makes every trainer's team unique from the start.

Designs would be nice to be split like a cute strong dragon and an edgy strong one too, so everyone gets to be a karenfag because they don't have to use a Pokemon just because of it's stats.

BW2 was a good concept, but like most good things, GF dropped it too. Make the challenge mode available from the very start and it's cool.

>Post-game
Most popular thing is a second region and another extra 8 badges + battle frontier. Everyone loves that, and if not the region, every game should have a sort of BF, ability to rematch most notable NPCs with strong teams and visit exotic places with new shit like sidequests and new Pokes.

Followin Pokes, ability to turn it off. Trainer customisation, secret bases or a fucking Villa that the player wins after beating a super-rich and strong trainer after becoming the champ, and gym leaders come there to see you and shit.

Like, after you beat E4, you have the option to reset every single trainer, only now they will have stronger teams so you don't face those lvl 5 trainers from the beginning of the game again. Like, dunno, every trainer will be level 40+ or some shit. And in order to make it less annoying, now when an old trainer sees you again, instead of jumping straight to battle they will ask you, and you can decline.

Maybe in next gen, make terrain moves that last until either a) are replaced or b) are nullified by an appropriate move.
Give them very mild effects. For example, while in Forest terrain, all grass Pokemon get a 1.67x multiplier for STAB instead of 1.5x

Well then the whole point is gone since the main problem with GF is that they have the games in development for way to short time. One year is not enough to make a good game.

But if we look aside of that then I would probably tell the team to stop fucking removing features of past games so that the newest game would clearly be the superior one instead of having to compete with older games.
