Twice in pokemon crystal, first was a shiny ponyta that I accidentally killed, and the second was a tangela that fled. Both of them outside of Mt.Silver, and there were maybe two or three encounters between those two.

Since capturing a shiny Goldeen in pokemon gold, those were and are the only shinies I've encountered. I didn't even remember that pokemon other than the roaming legendaries could run away from battle, but that is what the tangela did.

Thats why when I go into an area where there are pokemon like that, I always have a pokemon with damp, and i'll never step foot in any kind of safari zone (or its variations) that involve "cat and mouse" "baiting" catching mechanics

My first legit shiny seemed to come from a bug when I had a hacked shiny Standler.

I bread it with a ditto and got nothing but shiny baby Standlers.

Apart from that, it was a Shiny Litwick in White 2. Its highest IV was SpD at 26.

Twice. Once, I ran into a shiny Gastly in Pokemon Tower with no Pokeballs on me. I carry at least 20 Ultras at all times since then but I've had no luck even to this day. Another time after that, a golden Poochyena in Emerald before I could even possibly get Pokeballs, like I mean the first encounter of the game.

I always managed to trade/hack a masterball fairly early in the game just in case I'd encounter something hard to catch or able to easily fuck itself up.

But yeah, the first shiny I ever saw was a Breloom in the battle pyramid.

Only once when I was 11 and playing LG. It was a black Zubat in Mt Moon (it was a regular gba, no backlight), had a few regular poke balls and a team in their 60s. I killed it once I ran out of poke balls.
A couple years later I found a green Golbat in Meteor Falls in Emerald, and I was grossed out by its color. Caught it and evolved it, I love pink Crobat.

I ran into a shiny Durant and accidentally killed it. The sunlight was glaring on my screen and it didn't register that it was shiny until realized it for that split second it was sinking down as it fainted.

That was the weekend my girlfriend broke up with me from another state through a text message and refused to even see me when I rode 4 hours there to try and make things right.

yes, i was ev horde training for attack in that ice cave in x/y and i got a horde of vanillite or whatever and one was shiny. since those hordes give special attack i just ran from the horde.

i don't get the appeal of shinies, but i just started competitive battling this gen. do they have increased stats? how do you differentiate between hacked shinies and real ones? what's so special about them? am i missing something?
