You can only directly search for Pokémon if you have their dex entry. If you havn'T seen one yet you have to manually enter the name into the search field.

You can always put up something of value asking for a Scyther. Maybe you'll lucky and have a Scyther the next day you wake up. Worked for me all the time.

You could always breed your starter.

By breeding your starter you could get like most basic pokes from GTS

ehhhh, i was asking for a rayquaza way back to complete my dex and threw a bidoof in gts asking for one.

next day i got a shiny rayquaza. it was probably genned but was still nice.
