Generation 5 is the best but I'm talking SOLELY on its gameplay refinements, specifically reusable TMs, exp curve for letting low level mons catch up made super easy and also stopping you from just overleveling your starter (which they got rid of in Gen 6, why), smooth battles and menus, animated sprites (why such pixelated backsprites though), no Mega Evolution power creep.
However Unova is shit, and I'd gladly take 5000 HMs over having a railroaded straight line of a fucking region. It's not like you're not carrying a HM Slave with you anyway because there's TMs and shit hidden in plain sight behind Cut trees or Strength boulders so I don't know why people say "muh no need of HMs, best feature"
Other aspects of B/W are just plain not as good as Platinum's, from difficulty to music to atmosphere to actually having a good post-game. Yeah, BW2 added a lot and had PWT, but if it weren't for battling older characters and hearing remixes there would be no hype behind it. The Battle Frontier was far superior and you know it.
I'd kill to play Platinum running on Gen 5's engine, but alas. As it stands, the best overall Pokemon experience in terms of single player is
Blaze Black 2 and Volt White 2. They fix everything wrong with Pokemon as a whole, all that variety, fixed movepools and stats, trade evolutions being accomodated for single player, perfect level of difficulty requiring tons of strategy hnnng. If only Unova was a better region...
