The focus blast sailed into the hippo and smashed into its impressive bulk, but the sizable beast just gave an annoyed roar at the pain it caused. Erco placed the girl on the pokemon's back, and the two of them began to backpedal towards the city now that the wobbuffet holding them here was gone.

The bodyguard continued to send bullets down range at the soldier who had swapped to a pistol, and possibly the spy too if he didn't watch himself in poking out from behind trees. Along the way, the ground type smashed another meaty leg into the earth to shatter more of the terrain with earthquake. This was done both to further wound their assailants and the zoroark, and deny them of cover if they sought to pursue.

He sighed, preparing himself for some various form of torture from the chief of medicine, retribution for calling the Orrean man's wife an undead abomination one time too many.

For all that he'd managed to accomplish, Archer found that sometimes, life just refused to cut him a break.

The shots went wide but the earthquake continued to shake the remaining attackers, the attacking figure's illusion fading revealing another Zoroark.

The other guard continued to ignore the pounding sand through the protection of his clothing, closing the distance slowly on the bodyguard, weapon at the ready.

The Zoroark itself merely jumped down out of the destroyed treeline to face down the other, before darting at it with a blinding blast of darkness.

It seemed that luck had momentarily smiled upon the pair, as the cover of sand and distance between the two sides brought down the accuracy of the attacking forces. Even as they returned fire, Erco and his pokemon continued to peel back at a measured pace.

Fortunately the creature made a relatively stable spot to lay out the girl so that the trainer could examine her wounds. He tore open the clothing around her shoulder to get a closer look at the wounds torn into skin by the machine gunner, which made him frown immediately. Instead of attacking this turn he went ahead and pulled some supplies from one of the small pouches on his hip; holding medical supplies in contrast to the other holding munitions. The bodyguard wasn't a doctor but he knew how to dress a wound to help for the moment, and he went about doing that to help staunch any bleed out.

Before all of this the hippo used another earthquake, so that it wouldn't be rattling around while being used as a table. It had an ace up its sleeve, but it'd have to hold off on it until Erco had got her treated. It'd require carrying her again.

The attack finally seemed to do the job, the Zoroark going down as the ground shattered under it, the strange oppressive feel of the forest lightening somewhat upon it's defeat.

The last man stumbled as well, falling to one knee as his pistol fell to his side.

The Zoroark's trainer glared daggers at the bodyguard as he recalled the pokemon, tossing a Mightenya out instead and ordering it to charge the Hippo.

The field medicine seemed to work well enough for now, and Erco hoisted the girl back off the hippo and held her steadily. Just in time for the next pokemon to come out, which seemed to be one of the ubiquitous dog types. Now he just hoped they'd be able to get rid of it and flee.

As they moved back the hippo took advantage of its new freedom to move around, and dodge the incoming bite with a surprising amount of nimbleness. It continued to pull back, and while doing that, chose to use another move that wouldn't be hindered by the foe's aggressive posture harming its offensive stats. The dust-laden winds around them picked up in scale as the beast twirled, forming a dust devil in the vicinity that sent tearing sands at the mightenya. The gusts were surprisingly formidable, and the force of the air current threaten to send the new foe straight back into its trainer...and the hope was, send him out of here to so they could end this miserable fight.

Usually this move was to make foes run into stealth rock, but in this case there were bigger priorities.

Archer laughed; a kind of laugh that was both manic, and yet relieved at the same time, as though he were glad to finally have that laugh out of his system. This, unfortunately, was untrue. Archer knew well how he was around women when intoxicated. His one-time relationship with Ariana stood as a testament to that fact. Rumors, surely, abounded in the wake of that incident, as all good rumors are wont to do, but it did the good doctor no good to know more than he needed. Which, at the moment, was only what rumors would tell, nothing more.

"Should I apologize? Obviously I should, but how? I could give her flowers, maybe- Women like flowers when a man's trying to apologize, right?"

Strictly speaking, that wasn't entirely all true. Somehow, Archer had removed his jacket, tie, and shirt, and had the good doctor examine his burns- All, it seemed, without him ever realizing it had happened. Maybe he was still going crazy after all.

The second attack fared little better for either side of the fight, the hippo's thick skin did not even break as it was bitten. It gave the smaller dog a glare to kill. Without even needing to be ordered to do so, it slammed a leg down onto the mightyena with the same earth shattering force as before - the shock reaching far enough to reach the trainer who was, it seemed, closing in.

That made Erco curse, as it forced him to replace Emiko and cease from trying to end the fight in a hurry. The mauser broomhandle from before was raised back up, and with a muffled roar barely able to be heard over the storm, spat 8 rounds towards the charging soldier. Still with the armor piercing loadout.

The soldier easily recognized the weapon and swerved aside, the bullets shattering the trees behind him as he took cover before sweeping his own gun from behind his back and blind firing towards him from cover.

The EQ did some more damage on the Dog, who seemed to leap back panting a little before suddenly rushing with a full body tackle.

Seeing the incoming attack, hippowdon hunkered down and let the opponent ram into it at full speed and bounce off as the ground type's superior weight inevitably won out. A handful of rounds from the soldier commanding it also lodged harmlessly in its rhino-like skin. Erco thus used it for cover.

Both of them repeated their prior attacks, with Deitiker gritting his teeth from how close a few of those stray rounds had come. He stayed behind cover to minimize the chance of being hit, or damage if that wasn't possible. Fortunately, his pokemon was still very fit for fight outside of the weakened offense. As for himself...he could probably fire off another two bursts before needing to reload, provided he was light on the trigger. Well, one after slinging another quintet of slugs at the enemy gunman.

The first enemy from the mountains had him worried with his continued linger about the rear ranks, and for good reason, when another pokemon was sent out to join the battle in support of the dog. Now it was even worse, but at least the earthquake would slam both. The surprise strike landed and a claw cut into the aforementioned leathery epidermis. But now the hippo was aware of it, and such an accurate move wouldn't work again while its guard was up.

Zera's answer left Archer incredulous. Yes, he too had been a victim of that existential mindfuck that was the end of the world, but the good doctor's answer felt like more of a cop-out than anything else. Apparently, they really had just lucked into a happy relationship. Certainly, Archer wasn't prepared to bring about another apocalypse just to apologize to a woman he hardly knew. "No, I think I'll stick with the flowers" he said. "It may be cliche, but it's simple, and it gets the job done better than another apocalypse."

The second attack apparently did some damage, the pokemon limping away from the partly caved in ground as it circled around for a free spot to attack, ignoring the cat pokemon beside it..

The counter fire caused a yelp from the concealed soldier, as one of the rounds impacted with the hand holding the gun over the rocks he had taken cover behind.

With it's trainer distracted the pokemon merely charged once more in anger.

This time the mad rush struck home, and with a surprising amount of force that also brought one of the mighty pokemon's legs to buckle. Fortunately that is not what happened this time, but the strike still made hippowdon roar in angered pain. It recovered in time to notice the more agile of the duo closing in for a flank strike, and it snorted a stream of dust into the persian's face just in time to make it stumble and miss in it's lunge.

While it's adverse weather continued to wear down the pair like stone, it continued to shatter the earth with thunderous stomps.

It was, after all, the most effective move to use in this instance. Furthermore since it's other two were basically useless, and the final one it was holding in reserve...

The Swiss man spent the last few shots in his gun's magazine to continue suppressing the smg-armed trooper, and then snappily moved to reload once the final few mauser bullets had been expended. He did not move from his hiding spot as the running battle continued, making an even bigger mess of the ruins and the surrounding environment. Regrettable but inevitable.

The snapback from the takedown combined with the sandstorm and the slight earthquake damage proved to be too much for the pokemon, the Dark type flying off of the beast and landing some distance away. It's trainer still in no condition to return it.

Still even despite the wound the man managed to shout up. "You can't escape, you might as well give up now!"

If one thing was for certain, it was that he wouldn't be taking the enemy up on that after everything that had just happened.

"No, you had better back off before you wind up buried!" He called back.

The hippo was successfully hit again by the persian while this hurried 'negotiation' went on, it proving more effective than the dog that it had teamed up with. It gave another annoyed roar and swiftly backpedaled away from it. While doing so it took deep breaths, kicking off a second wind to replenish its depleted reserves of stamina. Erco hoped that would further entice the enemy duo to cut their loses to see that this could drag on for a long time.

...but he hoped it did not, because if his uniform sticking to his body was any indication, he'd need to get patched up soon as well. With the girl unconscious, he'd not be able to do that until they were in the clear.

While the hippo recovered he finally moved to send out his own second pokemon, a seldom seen creature that lived deep in the mountains where only the odd spelunker disturbed it. Being a mountaineer himself, it was no shock that he had one of these, and the gigalith was very well acclimated to the dying sandstorm as it was brought forth. Acting with haste, it hurled boulders at the persian, and anyone else who might try to get too close.

Now that he had two pokemon to back him up, he felt a bit more confident. If nothing else it made three meatshields between the girl and danger.

The shower of rocks proved to be far more numerous for even the cat to avoid, the trainer keeping just out of sight enough to wince as the shower of rocks rained down everywhere.

The shower ended leaving the pokemon out cold on the ground in the blowing sand, it's trainer looking at it for a moment before recalling it and stepping out again.

He'd look back at Erco and then towards the girl, a smile still playing upon his face as he looked at them.

When the dust settled, in the most literal sense, one of the trainers had fallen and so had both pokemon. For the first time Erco got a good look at the person who had been following them this entire time. It wasn't what he had expected, but as an experienced warrior, he well knew to never underestimate a foe. More so one that has proven themselves prior to have strange and unpredictable abilities.

Perhaps the most troublesome was his rapid ability to reposition. Gigalith moved to place himself along the flank towards the spy, using his stony bulk as further shielding. His trusty sidearm was leveled back at the stranger just the same.

"Yes, it does look that way."

More teeth gritting ensued, a lot more.

"You acquired what you came for. More bloodshed benefits no one at the moment." The last line was certainly worth noting. Fact is getting to a hospital was more important that petty honor and pride. But it was a risk he didn't like not lashing out immediately. Still, the time it could save....

"I trust neither of us wants to end up like your friend." There wasn't any motion towards it, but he meant the guy who was now half buried under rubble, or maybe the one further back with the bruised up legs.

Either way it was a surprisingly bloody little scrap.

The trio waited on hair triggers, and the bodyguard made sure to keep the girl covered from fire whilst he waited to see any outcome.

The man waited for the dust to slowly clear before looking beyond them and behind, where the other reinforcements would most certainally soon arrive, his clothing was torn, dusty, and a little mud stained as well, but it was clear that this was one of the men that had somehow been tailing him since the beginning of when things went wrong.

The Spy himself seemed to just silently look back at him, eyeing him like a salesman wanting a good deal, the finger still holding off the trigger as he clicked the pokeball out, revealing a Kadabra which came to land beside the man.

He smiled again teeth glinting in the clearing sun, his tone sounding almost amused at the thought.

"True though, I acquired what I was ordered for," He said, looking towards the girl. "But it wouldn't pay to let you escape after all you've just done, after all they still have to repay the colonel for his own role in this."

He looked towards the defeated men and then back again, "They understood the risks, they had their duty, just as you do with that little lady, just like everyone does."

He paused again and then nodded, the hand slipping the gun aside as the psychic type braced itself for whatever order it was given. "Well, I suppose I'll at least give you a little head start."

A thick cloud of acrid smoke plumed out from the point of impact, and him and his pokemon used it to retreat towards town under cover during said head start - making the most of it.

The attack would smack into the little electric sheep the pokemon suddenly puffing itself up in response as the barely hanging in Machoke attempted to knock Garland down with a series of blows.

For now it seemed that the strange assailant was more or less holding true to his word, because once the smoke had cleared Erco did not see him following on his tail. The second attack brought the Flaffy down to the edge as well, the pokemon simply blasting back with another thunderbolt...

The appearance of the sudden summons did have a large reaction of whoever was left though, a hurried radio message going out as one more man began making potshots down the hill towards the mage.

The Machoke continued it's single minded drive to knock know you all down starting with Garland.

And above them the spark simply grew brighter and larger.

The effect would backfire as the effort would interfere with the initial spell, causing an unstable series of portals to erupt all around them to various dimensions and locations, the effects hitting in turn as they did. The attack would finally bring the Machoke Crashing down upon Garland, the trainer swapping it out and tossing out a Haunter, which barely avoided the sudden bombardments of orbs causing the man to look up in the sky and have a collective freak out and toss a smoke bomb blindly down the hill. The warp's effects were staggering the ground flashing with bolts of unknown energies, the sky changing a rainbow of hues, and the battle that continued to wage over their heads.

The Unown only pressed the attack, more hidden power blasts soon joining in the first group as they attempted to drive the glitches back to where they belonged even as their own numbers dwindled. Everyone's weight would change rapidly as gravity reversed and increased itself at random.

The attack went wide at the last second, but as the crabhammer came down the poison jab landed dead center on his heart, the two strikes killing him instantly as the latter tore the body in two in a splash of blood. The haunter ignored it's fallen trainer and focused on it's new opponent, darting to one side before firing another shadow ball at the weakened pokemon.

The environment would get a little better the more out of the way they got but it was still none the less deadly.

That blast of cold was especially brutal for Black Mage's Dragonite and Nidoqueen. Taking Wonder's keystone from his Aggron (with considerable difficulty, shit was heavy), he directed it to help attack the imp with a hurled stone. Drizz'l's Ariados joined in by firing a toxic stinger, while his Umbreon snapped at the pursuing ghost.

The glitches were proving very evasive thus far, but their hits were only dumb luck. These creatures had very little concept of accuracy or direction. A few of them broke off from the swarm, zipping erratically over to the Unown near the portal to examine what they were doing.
