I've been a fan of Pokemon ever since I got my hands on Pokemon Red and watched Ash's first glimpse of Ho-Oh. I've played games of every generation except for the latest X and Y.

I can't help but feel that, after all these years, Gamefreak has refused to take significant leaps in their games. (They refuse to take risks and grow up).

I'm listing aspects I think the game designers can alter, experiment, and implement that will significantly improve the gaming experience:

1. Level System. Leveling up doesn’t truly reflect the kind of training your Pokemon undergo. Sure, EV training does add some nuances to your Pokemon’s growth: you can choose to improve its defense or attack or any other stat, but the difference it makes is so insignificant for the single playthrough that as long as you out-level the gym leaders and the elite four, you are good to go.

I am suggesting that instead of leveling up, Pokemon improve their stats decreasingly in diminishing return fashion. This reminds me of the leveling system implemented starting Gen V where a higher leveled Pokemon defeating a lower-leveled with give much less experience. (Realistically, bullying a billion weak level 1 pokemon should not improve your pokemon’s skill)

2. Turn-based? I think it is time we scrap the classic turn-based mechanics and opt for a more mature and realistic Active Time. A faster pokemon should be able to execute more moves than a slower pokemon and they should make adjustments to stats accordingly. I am seeing the Speed stat playing a larger role here and calculate evasion from this stat as well.

3. 4 Moves Only. I think that being only able to retain four moves is the greatest disservice to the game considering that is not realistic at all. Of course it would prove too chaotic and crazy for us to go the way of gaining and being able to execute every possible move the Pokemon have learned. It’s chaos, I agree. Thus I am proposing a model by which we may be able to implement this fairly and feasibly: let us talk stamina.

Executing moves consumes stamina instead of PP. Basic moves (Ember) uses less stamina than powerful moves (Flamethrower). Training your pokemon and improving their stats increases stamina, making powerful moves accessible. Your pokemon can learn theoretically some 12 moves depending on how you train your Pokemon. I am imagining some move tree (like a skill tree in other games)

I can train a BURST torchic to improve its Sp Atk, and make it learn Ember < Incinerate < Flamethrower < Fire Blast. They are the same move with increasing intensity, with the more powerful requiring more stamina. Or I can train a Damage-Over-Time Torchic, improve its speed and learn just the basic moves Ember, Peck, Scratch; improve its speed, and land more attacks quickly.

No move is more superior to the other. Ember will have as much use as Fire Blast depending on your play style and they will have their trade-offs and advantages. Walls will block BURSTs and punish them when their stamina is depleted while remain vulnerable to continuous assault by a Damage-Over-Time Torchic. On the other hand BURST will find its use against sweepers with low defenses, and so on.

I am envisioning that every pokemon, evolved or not, with find their niche in the battlefield. Every move will find its use. And team composition to be highly unpredictable and surprising. Competitive gameplay will no longer be just about bringing in the 50 most powerful familiar faces (honestly, it’s all just legendaries dominating the uber). True skill will come into play. Defenses will finally matter! And you really need to think, not just sweep.

Pikachu training to outspeed Raichu in the anime will finally make sense! 

Tell me what you think. Of course some fun additions to the game include having the necessity to eat, sleep and rest in towns. Plus side-missions and a great narrative please (Pokemon started making the plot important around Gen IV, the Team Galactic fiasco. White/Black/White2/Black2 also introduced a pretty compelling story with a sense of urgency.)

Not only should that not happen, because the point is to evolve your Pokemon to make them stronger (another part of the feeling of progress I referred to earlier, which is a key factor that makes Pokemon so addicting in the first place), but the changes you've suggested will not do that. Unless you for some reason do away with base stats altogether or make evolutions redistribute them instead of improving them, then evolutions will be strictly better.

Again, your changes will not make this happen. If anything you'll unbalance the game even more. You've only changed what makes a Pokemon strong, not whether or not they actually are strong or not. It'll just be a different 50 pokemon, if not a different 20 because of your changes.

Battle mechanics are fine.

Where gamefreak needs to evolve is everywhere outside of battling. They've been recycling the same skeleton of the base game since the original release.

How about a different formula besides gym leaders and elite 4? How about giving trainers nuance and challenge and making them all unique instead of flooding routes with thousands of useless trainers who are no threat? How about adding substantial side quests and optional content with significant rewards and incentives (as opposed to now where you have to work your ass off for a max potion)

I think the foundation of the battling system and leveling system is strong enough that people have been willing to suck up the stale and antiquated gameplay for it, not the other way around

While a lot of these ideas need work, I agree with their spirit - the battle system in Pokémon could benefit from a dramatic overhaul in which multiple playstyles are viable. Stall is dead, competitive battles usually revolve around hyper-offense or predicting a switch. I'd like to see the OHKO become much less common in-game.

Also, petitions are for nerds.
