Yokai Watch might be popular but it'll never be as popular as Pokemon in its peak. Pokemon came around a time when video games were at a peak in popularity and Nintendo was still a massive company. Most people have at least heard of Pokemon, even if they don't actually know any aside from maybe Pikachu. Pokemon was fucking everywhere back in the late 90's and early 2000's, most kids had their parents drag them to see the movie, there was shit tons of commercial and advertisement, even a show. Though all that said, most only really know about the original 151, and Pokemon seems to be finally losing its steam.

Yokai Watch has not even been localized. Pokemon wasn't an international hit until the anime and games hit outside Japan

why are people even mad that Yokai Watch is outselling pokemon?

>GF realizes that they can't compete with Yokai Watch over the kid audience and that their true fans are the ones who grew up with it during the late 90s/early 00s.
>They ditch the whole happy-la-la-land setting and take the series in a more mature (still not grimdark) direction.

Fan loyalty, people surprised that Pokemon is finally losing steam. Gen 3 is arguably when most people stopped caring about Pokemon, and after Gen 6 I'd say a lot of people are just sorta tired of it in general. Not to mention all the yearly releases have hurt it.

Yes. Level 5 themselves have already made it clear that they are not planning on Yo-kai Watch's popularity lasting, and are planning "something bigger" to come out in 2015.

It is though, in Japan at least. There was really no other competition before, except maybe Digimon. And now Yokai Watch came out and while it might not have actually outsold it or whatever, it didn't necessarily sell like shit.

yokai is too heavily Japanese. It's never going to make it in America. It's going to be the next thing to fill the 5am anime slot and that's about it.
