Those subtitled episodes make it clear only Jessie and James' Pokemon truly respected their authority.

It was further cemented in the later Diglett episode. They're newly-evolved Arbok and Weezing were the only ones to obey orders, when even Gary's Pokemon would not.

These came to mind immediately. I also liked A Chansey Operation. The earlier seasons were so good a making interesting filler. I think the art style helped with that, they felt more exaggerated and cartoony back then.

It was like they were trying to actually make an interesting and entertaining cartoon, instead of just a mindless advertisement for the games. Too bad that stopped halfway through Johto.

There were several tournament arcs in Sinnoh and Unova, also the Marine Cup in Johto, some battles against gym leaders and rivals, Contests, those specials with Deoxys, Togepi, Riolu, etc, episodes involving the villainous teams, and probably others I can't remember now.

The only episode of his I didn't like was Xatu the Future, which despite having an awesome name, was one of the weakest Johto fillers where Ash and friends just stood around watching shit happen.

At the top of the Johto fillers scale are episodes such as The Kecleon Caper and The Wayward Wobbuffet.

I agree. The anime still has the occasional fun episode but it's usually a battle-centric one so it shows off the more impressive (in comparison I mean) animation. It doesn't have that same cartoonish humor that the show had originally.

Of course anytime I try bringing up this people always say I'm just a genwunner or a nostalgiafag or whatever. I don't get how people can watch S1 of the Pokemon anime and what it is today and even think it's the same show outside of the superficial elements. Their main character isn't even the same person anymore other than his goal, and that wasn't because they developed his character, but rather washed him out until he had no personality.

Takeshi Shudo was head writer, and he was one of those based people who saw his program as something more than advertisements. He tried his best the make the series something that could be enjoyed by young and old alike.

Unfortunately, the other producers did see the series as nothing more than an advertisement, and eventually Shudo ended up leaving towards the end of Johto, though his input seems to have been somewhat neutered during Johto with all the filler bullshit.

Though it's a pity he died, he would be happier not knowing what become of his work. Pic related.

I honestly wonder what it's like to be one of the Pokemon anime writers, to not really care about what you're doing, to write one soulless kid's cartoon script after the next. Do they do other writing projects on the side and just keep the Pokemon job as a stable paycheck?

I mean, I'm pretty sure they have had the same writers since the beginning, and I'd like to think someone who has been involved with the franchise for so long cares at least a little bit. I find it hard to believe people like Shoko or the people around her don't care about the franchise, at least a little bit.

I know Shoko has nothing to do with the show, I was citing her as an example of someone who invests a lot of time into the franchise. I probably didn't word that well enough.

As I recall they said in some interview they still had basically the same writers when DP was airing. It's been a while since then so I don't know if that's changed.

Go ahead and shout nostalgia all you want, indigo league, at least the early to mid stuff, was the best anime. Sure it had shitty filler episodes just so they could shoe horn in every pokemon as pokemon of the week, just like every series does. But a shitty clefairy on mt moon episode doesn't change the good parts of it. It had some truly memorable and unique episodes, the characters actually had personality before they all become one dimensional running jokes, and they didn't devolve too hard into the same cookie cutter formula for every episode.

Unfortunately the worst part about early seasons were the battles. Even when they were good they were short as fuck, and most gym fights were either interrupted by TR, or just had some stupid bullshit ruin the fight.
