How many eggs did it take you to breed that shiny?

I hatched 8 eggs when I got my shiny Eevee in Y, but in X, I've been through 200 eggs trying for a shiny Spritzee and haven't got one yet. Is it just random? I know what the odds are, but is when you get the shiny just a random thing?

I've never encountered a Shiny in the wild, nor hatched one from an Egg.

I've played Pokemon since Red/Blue first came to the U.S., and I just will never get my own Shiny, apparently. I got so desperate, I tried to chain-fish a Shiny Luvdisc in Y, since they're a guaranteed encounter with the Old Rod on Kalos Route 8, but after a chain of 196, I gave up because it was just too tedious.

Someone hold me.

I've only encountered one shiny Pokemon. It was a Smeargle. I had balltism, so I automatically threw a Pokeball because I like all of my Pokemon in the default balls. I didn't realize that Sketch would fail after the Pokeball missed.

Really wanted a shiny Slowking to use in VGC, ended up hatching 500 eggs the day before and got two shinies, but both of them had at least one low IV so I didn't end up using them.
Every other time I've just happened to hatch one, not specifically tried.

When I was breeding for a perfect Bisharp I got a shiny on my fourth or fifth egg. It has Inner Focus though so it's just sitting in the PC until I feel like going for an Ability Capsule.

This was also when I was relatively new to Y, and people kept saying how Shinies are super common now, so I didn't think much of it.

Now that I'm actually hunting for a Shiny Ralts, it took about ~150 eggs to finally hatch one. But it's male. So I'm still breeding for one right now.
