Overall Pokemon started out with an extremely dull and glitchy game. The only reason it took off is because of these two things.
1) The connectivity
In Japan, people love connectivity with all their might a game like pokemon that allowed you not just to battle but to trade and compare with friends was perfect for Japs.
2)The anime
It's fair to say that without it people wouldn't have bought into pokemon overseas.
