I think you are talking to a couple people and projecting that experience onto the population as a whole. Sawk and Throh are pretty memorable for BW players as you get them way too early and they clean house.

Pretty much this. Used a Throh on a second run through of white, and nothing could touch me. I actually love this duo. Im sure they mostly get hate because of the whole "pokemon shouldnt be wearing clothes"
