Seen any movies lately? I just watched the Genesect one with Mewtwo in it. It seems that there's always a scene where Ash is amazed at seeing legendary pokemon talk when there has been over a dozen movies where it happened. You think after the first five or so he'd get used to it. It's like they all develop amnesia between movies.

Also at no point did Ash point out the fact that Mewtwo pretty much killed him once. You'd think someone would remember that.

It's mostly that the movies are basically non-canon, and the BW series was pretty much a soft reset anyway, explaining why Ash went back to his original peaks of retardedness.
I've heard that Japanese fandoms don't really even have a concept of canon in the same way western groups do, so you can basically only take any episode or movie to be consistent with itself.

To be fair, I'd be kind of caught off-guard by Shaymin and Zoura. I mean, the giant legendaries talking is something that's not horribly unexpected, but seeing something that looks like a common Pokemon start running its mouth is a different matter.

In BW and XY, the writers started realizing it was stupid. Nowadays Ash usually goes "oh hey, it's Pidgey!" then scans it anyway.

This is a show for kids.
The kids weren't even alive when the first season aired.

Therefore Ash isn't allowed to know more than the kids do. He is getting mindwhiped by the producers regulary exactly for that purpose.

Game dex is a magical device that automatically creates information on the pokemon you caught
Anime dex is a more realistic version that essentially acts as a pokepedia, with pre-written entries

The anime is set several decades after the games. Red already caught everything and filled the Pokédex, now in the anime his son sets out using one now that they're a common piece of equipment instead of a rare, expensive invention.
