The difference being that a new generation of Pokemon changes a shit ton of stuff and adds lots of important things as well. Look at how how Pokemon ha changed since 2007 whereas CoD still looks and plays the same.

When you think about it, it's a little bit of both. New generations an regions add a level of world building, and lore, while sticking to a fomrular from previous games.
It's remakes that are guilty as hell of be shitty rehashes.

No. Well maybe some people are, but for the minority of people who care more about the pokemon themselves and lore than the gameplay, new generations are very meaningful. I fucking love seeing new pokemon. I also get hyped over everything else but only to the extent I would for any old video game.

pokemon is a little better than cod, since they try at least to add new features to each gen, in addition to the new pokemon that keep the metagame fresh.
the metagame is really where pokemon shines in comparison to cod. in fact, id say game freak has basically locked themselves in this state. if they changed existing mechanics instead of adding small ones, theyd fuck up the metagame and everyone would kill them. game freak basically just maintains and keeps the metagame fresh.
compare this to cod that has better graphics each game and just releases to keep their metagame relevant

Well if any of that was true..
Sure the battle mechanics are one of the strongest points of the franchise, probably along with catching.
However every change they have done after gen IV to it has just made it worse. I dare say that the metagames hasn't been as bad as it is now since gen I, and that says a lot.

Most changes they do to the rest of the game are changes in the wrong direction. As in adding new features before shortly cutting them again. The only changes that stay permanent these days are the ones making the games more casualized.

Each Gen has changed the game drastically.
Gen 1, the beginning.
Gen 2, two new types.
Gen 3, double battles.
Gen 4, physical / special split.
Gen 5, did nothing.
Gen 6, one new type and Megas.

CoD adds guns and new places to use those guns. They still play the same, only perhaps better handling due to better hardware.

The only one I'm willing to give you is the 3D.
The new type isn't anything particularly groundbreaking and has been done before with gen II.
Mega Evolutions are really just glorified forme changes(they're even coded as such).

Triples is just Double battles 2.0 Although Rotation was an interesting and fresh concept that got very little attention.

Those are just setting changes. AS somebody who has played each one a lot with friends, the gameplay never underwent drastic changes after Modern Warfare. unlike Pokemon which constantly adds new battle types, changes the fundamentals with abilities and the like, and actually looks visually different most of the time.

The only reason it gets so much attention is because new types are very rarely introduced unlike say new pokémon, moves and abilites. If your going to count type additions you might as well count the rest of the ones I listed as well. All of them change the gameplay to some extent but it's not really anything drastic.

I wasn't the one who brought up the graphics but I said that it was the only one I could partly agree with. Normally a jumb from 2D to 3D has a huge impact on games, but in pokémon's situation it doesn't take much advantage of the z-axis and still mostly feels like a 2D game rendered in 3D.

We got a new fucking type.
And we now have Mega Evolutions.
But what really makes Pokemon stand out from those other franchises is truly innovative and virtually unseen practice of introducing new features, such as trade communication buttons (like thumbs up and down), Pokeball release customization, Trainer customization, and Secret Bases and then taking them out again as if they never existed.
This tecnhique of giving and then cruelly taking away really does something for the fanbase. It's enjoyable to have what you love and have always wanted (ie new ways of interacting with your Pokemon like Pokemon following you) and then having them pulled from your cold grasping hands while being slapped with near silence and disdain truly is the pinnacle of game development.

Really, with what's possible now with the 3DS, there really should be more content for the money the game costs. I forgot where, but I read once that the 3DS game carts have the capacity for up to 5 full regions. While that's a huge stretch, I do think there should be a lot more content in-game, even if they keep the mechanics similar or only tweak them. A more cohesive online battling community with a matchmaking function and leaderboards would be nice, and the way to get around cheating in pokemon would be to use rentals. More contest type things in game, and games within the game. It might seem redundant, but it gives people something to do in order to complete the game 100%. Hard mode in game like with gen5. Official programmed modes like Nuzlocke. There are all sorts of things that wouldn't take too terribly long to program that can fit into the game, it's just that they don't HAVE to put them in in order to keep the money flowing in, and keep people buying the game.

From what I understand, something that wasn't taken into the next game, resurged with Black Ops (which was apparently one of the best in a while) is its own separate mode/lore, and is the equivalent of like, Pokemon Amie or Contests

A small problem is that while the game cart ca hold up to 8GB(?) the 3DS default SD card can only hold 2. XY take 1.7 and ORAS 1.8, so while GF could certainly optimize the games better it's not like they could put 5 regions in if they still wanted to offer it digitally to people without forcing them to buy a new SD card.

ALthough this will probably be expanded to 4GB soon, since that's the default SD card for the New 3DS and they will likely take advantage of that.

Every Treyarch game had them.
CoD had two development teams, so every change you saw in a game you could expect to see again and usually expanded in two years when that developer released their games.

Basically CoD consisted of two game series that bot had biannual releases.

I like the idea that I heard some time earlier on /vp/ that doesn't seem very likely, that it's possible future remakes will be included with main games, like accessing Hoenn in pokemon Z, or Kanto, or whatever. Still, what you say about the default New 3DS being 4GB, I can see them doing this. I don't think the next games, or even the next gen will be N3DS exclusive, as none of the games were ever DSi exclusive, but I think they might take advantage of it anyway.

I honestly think it is better to expand existing features minimally than to take out old features just to make the games feel unique.

Most cod games are improvements. Sure they play basically the same and the changes are small, but each game is usually seen as an advancement.

Pokémon is a bit different sure. Removing some features and adding some others in their place makes the games feel more different than average CoD games, although they are still quite alike when ignoring these gimmicks.
However you can't really say that each game is an improvement then, I would hardly say that ORAS is an improvement of XY in many categories.

of course anon! zelda, sonic, mario kart, they're all carbon copies of each other! and it's not like in pokemon they've tweaked moves or abilities and add new ones or anything, no! it's just exploring the same region with the same plot and the same items and pokedex every single time! and of course online functions such as wondertrade and gts have /always/ been there, yeah! especially remakes, why they add absolutely nothing to them, not even more pokemon in the dex or an expanded story and areas.

That's not really what we're discussing here though, which is release times and change between games. And in that regard CoD and Pokémon aren't that different.

Zero of the things you're saying would be regarded as actually adding things though. ORAS added most of the few good ideas in that wall of text and more but they're criticized as cash ins.
It's not that they don't do it, it's that they create a huge character customization system to the point you can buy a new goddamned purse and shoes in Paris and people do nothing but complain there aren't enough colors. They added so much post-game to ORAS with gorillions of hidden legendaries, delta episode, Mega stone hunt, mirage islands, Mega elite 4, secret bases and lissia and Wallace's bullshit contests, and all people can bitch about is no Battle Frontier.

Pokemon is automatically better because on top of the main games you have ten thousand spinoffs of dozens of genres. Even Halo tried to do something different with Wars, even if it failed.
