If you're actually interested in pokemon and know what you're talking about - which you probably do - you could ask what their team is like, what kind of sets they're using, or if they are playing in game you can comment about the gym they're on or the battle maison or the hassles of breeding or whatever they're doing. If you are ignorant about pokemon you could comment on how interesting it is to see someone playing pokemon, ask how the game has changed over the years you were absent. If you're not interested in pokemon at all don't even bring it up. But don't ask "what's the obvious thing you're clearly doing in front of my face?"
