Themes like war, disease, political corruption could be mentioned. They dont have to take center stage. The player just needs to know this world has its fair share of real, adult problems.

Realism.
-Eggs actually come from breeding. Admit it.
-Reference what Pokemon eat more often. Some Pokemon eat Pokemon, it's a fact of life.
-Mention wars and battles where Pokemon were used and how.
-Actually explain how the government works. Gen V itself has a hugeass plothole due to this.

-Make the team a bit more evil and calculating, but not in overdrive. A force more than mooks to steamroll. Like... Pokemon Yakuza or something.
-Play this straight. No feminine son who is your rival. Sympathy can be played, but only to a minimal effect. The "evil goal" must be tangible, maybe not even focused around a legendary toy-selling Pokemon.

Come to think about it, how little do we know about Pokemon trainer history? We know that people married Pokemon, used Apricorns, worshipped them as gods, and stuff like that. But what do we know about how training became a profession, history of notable trainers/Champions/Elite 4, etc.?

Some Pokemon games are darker than others, already. Gens 2, 3, and 6 are all pretty bright, cheerful, shiny, etc, but Gens 1, 4, and 5 have a dash of darkness to them.

While none of the games are anything approaching dark, the original game is probably the closest, because it at least hints at actual issues: the mafia, genetic engineering, technology, etc.

I'd say that a good, dark Pokemon game would model itself after Gen 1, 4, and 5, and Pokemon Special.

The same way Tolkien made the Hobbit and LOTR Middle-Earth more mature with the Silmarillion.

You don't need try hard violence or an edgier art style to make a setting darker, just give it a more mature tone whilst still being respectful and true to the franchise. The pokemon world no doubt has it's problems, but by a large margin it is a better world to live in than ours.

For the most part, edgy is a matter of execution, not concept. You could have a pokemon game set in some war-torn region, and it could be light-hearted and hopeful in tone, with typical themes of co-operation and rebuilding etc etc, and that wouldn't be edgy, whereas you could have one where it's all EVERYONE IS sO STUPID AND WORTHLESS THEY LOVE THIS WAR LOOK AT ALL THIS DEATH AND SUFFERING ISN'T IT SHOCKING? Just get writers that are willing to touch on more heady themes without talking down to their audience.

Here's a throwaway example:

>The local region has gotten sick of dicks trying to take over the world with Legendary Pokemon
>The villainous team is a covert task force meant to prevent that from ever happening by locking down all Legendaries and disturbances related to them with extreme prejudice
>Has been irking the local wilds, making relations tense and causing the local training scene to look inward and become reliant on captive breeding
>Occasionally get a slight case of massive property damage from said irked Pokemon
>To solve this quagmire, you must rally with your team around something that the world around you has seemingly forgotten: Trust

For extra chuckles, keep the protagonist 10 years old again and see where it goes.

I think all of this could be accomplished if you set a Pokemon game in the past. It'd be awesome to let the player experience the time when Pokemon trainers were just becoming what they are now.

It'd be like an era of greater danger, there could be a cold war going on between the regions, criminal gangs could be more prominent, catching Pokemon would be more dangerous and difficult because of the lack of advanced tech, and young trainers would be treated a more like adults.

Along our journey we would learn about world, and be able to witness a few key historical events.

Black and White were incomplete examples, in my opinion. They touched on some interesting themes and concepts, but by and large danced around those themes and concepts rather than explore them in any meaningful depth.

Villain team isn't an evil organization or a corrupt company. Make them a street gang. Theft vandalism and smuggling illegal stuff like slowpoke tails is their mo. They're a bunch of teenagers who work for this foreign guy who gave them a way to be destructive and let their bad behaviour flourish. Big bad is just an anarchist dude who has a personal grudge with the League Champion for dumping him when they were both kids. She grew up rich so he hates rich people. Sp he has his little thug group wreck up whatever they can out of spite. The player can work with Jenny and Looker to bring down the big bad.

Maybe rival can join thug team to spite player because he wants you to lose so he finds some"rough and strong " friends. Then he realizes how far he has gone just to beat you after he almost kills somebody in a house fire. He turns himself in and gives you the key to their secret base. Maybe the villains can blow up a bridge early game that locks off the part of the region where the post game happens.

Sounds like Silver from GSC. Except Silver was never your friend.

In fact, Silver crossed with Barry would be the best rival. A kid you've known for years who is so desperate to grow up and get stronger he turns to whatever Bad Guys the story has. Maybe have him travel with you not just on one route, but between the starting town and right before gym two. A couple times before he leaves you guys would work together in a double battle and you'd actively see his guys growing at a slower pace than yours (turning mechanics into a numerical representation of the story). There might be events that show and don't tell that you are good friends (which is where BW and XY failed).

Eventually, he joins Team Bad Guys and you face against him at least twice as an Bad Guy Admin the second time his pokemon don't listen to him every turn because the trust and love is no longer there.. There is some discussion between you and Professor Tree and he talks about the choices pokemon trainers make, and how he had high hopes for the both of you and now isn't sure. Before the final showdown with Bad Guy Leader, your Rival and the Leader have an on screen falling out that reiterates all the themes that we've heard from Gen 1, he gets defeated and you have to step in.

The Pokemon games have already touched upon a lot of dark stuff. XY flat out said that someone's beloved pet was sent to war and killed, so he commited large-scale pokemon genocide to bring her back to life. That's some dark shit. I think to make the pokemon games darker, all you have to do is to focus more on those aspects, because the games have a lot of stuff like that. Marowak's murder, theft, breaking and entering, hostage situations, blowing up an entire lake and leaving all its magikarps to die from suffocation/burns, etc etc.

Maybe all you need to do is remove the friends, make the rival a jerk - maybe even a member of the bad guys, I dunno - and provide no cute friendship stuff or comedy relief. Simply forcing the player to see the bad things, with no distractions.

Dark can be done without edgy.

Dark is a setting where millions died in a war over already scarce and diminished resources, ultimately resulting in no gain.

Edgy is when it's a genocide over affinity for colorful cartoon horses.

Dark settings have people starving in the streets.

Edgy ones have them turn to cannibalism on day 2.

Dark pokemon stories are doable... A government that confiscates all pokemon it deems "too powerful"... "Too dangerous for public availability."
Imagine if smogon was a government law enforcement agency in the pokemon world, and everything above NU was banned. Local municipality law enforcement officers might have access to RU or UU pokemon, and state agencies might have OUs at their disposal... But Daring to oppose the party would bring the national government's Ubers down on you in one quick strike.

They forget that the legendaries are there for a reason, proceeds to capture the box legendary and torture it. Player finds evidence of this while skulking through the bad guy's fortress. The player battles the bad guy for control of the region. Losing, the bad guy retreats, activating the self-destruct of the facility. The player can choose to find all the hidden items in the base, and shut down the device causing the base to destruct, but any rooms they already went in will be blocked from entry upon the next time they enter.
A better villain would take elements from all the major villains of the series: Giovanni, Ghetsis, and Cyrus.

And say the loss of the base isn't the end of the main villain ambitions, as he shows up near the end of the story or during postgame, hinting that he still has a backup plan running. After all, the tech used wasn't lost.

Well, that depends. The first thing that comes to mind is introducing a character that tried to battle the League/Gyms and just failed horribly. And like, that was his whole "goal". When you meet him he's sulking, trying to figure out a "what now". He can either rekindle his flame for battling, or find another goal. That's growing up.

You could come accross the villanous team in a more palpable situation. You come into the shops and you see them mugging the owner (Until you run them off). You meet a random NPC in a forest or cave and he/she can't get out because their pokemo nwas stolen, and they can't defend themselves from the wild pokemon. Like, make it clear that they would be fucked if you hadn't come around.

Introduce an NPC, maybe a farmer that lost a lot because of wild pokemon or a natural disaster and now his family is cutting it short. They'll be fine, but they're dealing with trouble.

Maybe have a gym leader's family brought up because their children doesn't want to inherit the gym and talks about s/he'll do it anyway because it's expected

Just follow what the manga did and make several of the gym leaders corrupt.

Then have the player get involved by working with the police to investigate and expose them. Make each of the gym leaders involved in different operations like artificial resource scarcity that makes poke balls and potions go from $200 a pop to $10,000 a pop. Maybe another gym leader can be involved with illegal trade and poaching in the safari one.

You know corruption you would find in everyday life.

If I remember right, there was one series for each main series game, then Electric Tale and four single-volume gag manga based in the same universe, then ReBurst (13 books), then multiple series of four books each for the DS and GBA Mystery Dungeon games. There is no shortage of material to work with. But as long as the main anime keeps making money, they aren't going to stop producing it.
