TMs should be one time use but infinitely purchasable postgame. I liked the having to make decisions on who got the powermoves in a playthrough.

HMs need to be done away with altogether.

Once you beat the first gym, all pokemon able to learn cut currently gain the ability to cut shrubs and grass outside of battle. Same with the rest of the HMs.

No. Tri attack got usage then. So did the elemental punches. It wasn't terrible, just awkward, but it fit that generation. Gen 3 would have been easier if they did not redo the tms because gen2's tm moves gave you access to powerful moves so early on.

that's because the games were more single player focused than today

limited TMs encouraged you to plan your TM usage wisely, and thus made the games somewhat more difficult than the watered-down shit we have today

the change in TM mechanics came from the fact that, since BW, the games started being heavily multiplayer focused

gamefreak also wanted to further promote the participation in their own competitive events (VGC) for those extra autism sheckles
