Johto was poorly laid out and unremarkable.

The divergent paths that open up around Ecruteak city forced the whole game to assume you're a lower level than you are, making everything past the beginning of the game have very little progression or challenge. Where after Bryce (once the game became linear again) they should of bumped the trainer/wild pokemon levels up, but they didn't for some reason. Kanto all together was a mess, with the scarcest of breadcrumbs to tell you what the hell to do. Some people really appreciate that, but I don't particularly like leaving the player with no idea of how to progress the game.

That's a lot of stuff to cram onto a GBA cart, but the real reason for the omission of the day/night cycle lies in the original GBA's screen. Lacking a back-light, it suffered under even the most adequate lighting, causing most games to appear darker than they ought to have been. Gamefreak kept this glaring flaw in mind during the development of the Gen III games and decided to cut the day/night cycle to make the games easier to play.

Including Kanto. Trying to put enough material for TWO entire regions in one gameboy cartridge wound up making BOTH regions not as good as they could have been, and making for fighting 300 level 13 ratatas after the 6th gym. Should have implied next to Kanto by going to the same Pokemon League with the same people, and talked more about it instead of actually making it visitable. 16 badges was ridiculous, and trainer levels were annoying and repetitive. Only gyms that ACTUALLY gave me trouble were Whitney and Claire. Fuck that Miltank, and I love the shit out of Kingdra. Should have spent more time on making Johto better and left Kanto more, well, out of it.

Bad Pokemon distribution, both in wild and enemy teams.

If you want Houndoom in your team, you have to wait until you beat the Elite 4 and some badges afterward, when you probably have a final team all set. And if you want Misdreavus or Tyrannitar, YOU'RE FUCKED, because you can't get those two until the final battle, when you have your perfect team.

Also, there are some Johto Pokemon like:
>Stantler
>Grandbul
>Girafarig
>Octillery
>Magcargo
>Scizor
>Politoed

And many, many others who would make for great Pokemon to fight against in enemy teams, but 70% of the people in Johto fight you with Kanto Pokemon, and common ones at that.

Same thing with the gym leaders. I mean, Pidgey and Pigeotto for Falkner? Why not Hoothoot and Noctowl? Same with everyone else in Johto. Give Chuck a Hitmontop and a Heracross along with his Poliwrath, give Jasmine a Forretress, etc.

you trade a key item that ties to a specific mon, a key item that goes beyond generations

this isn't even trading, since the mon is yours

Bug catching is different because it is more of a contest than anything else since you are graded, and are very limited to bug type mons unlike in safari which is a bit more varied. And you can only keep one even.

I actually replayed it recently as I was visiting my parents and found it under my bed. Helped me cope with essays. Here's my opinion:

Pros:

It wasn't "giving" a pokemon technically, because you found it. You're just reviving it to be useful. It is not the same as trading nor catching the free Lati@s.

But go ahead, because it's in GSC it's allowed. Hell, I'd even say missing Kanto features should be there too but apparently it's okay, even though people bemoan battle Frontier missing and replaced with Maison.

You do not need those fossils. In G/S/C you can trade Chansey for an Aerodactyl. Reviving them just adds flavor. It's a little weird to have a healthy, active population of extinct pokemon.

They added it in because unlike in Gen 2, there is no accounting for what if any games you own from the Gen 1 remakes, Gen 3 games, or Gen 4 games. Back then you either had Gen 1, or you didn't. Having Gens 1 and 2 cut off from the rest did not help matters.

Notice how the fossils from Gen 4 aren't available in HG/SS? Same shit as what happened between R/B and G/S/C, only back then there were only 3 fossils and all of them were available in Gen 1. No new fossils means no need for fossil revival; not a removal of "features."

This is true, but is mitigated by the fact that the fossil pokemon can still be traded from gen 1.

In the literal sense, true but once again mitigated by the fact that all the pokemon that could be captured in the safari zone was possible to capture in silver/gold.

Also the bug catching contest is pretty much safari zone (bug edition) the only difference is that it's just limited to bugs.
