The types shouldn't be taken so literally. I realize it's "evil" type in Japan, but I think it's more reasonable that that's simply a generalist description than anything, considering we see that shit a fucking lot in pokemon.
It's more likely that the types represent a common idea and therefore take in a lot of elements of that. I mean, look at Dragon. It's almost begun to represent actual Dragon's, along with a sense of elite/deity-like presence, rage, etc.. Common themes we see with the type. This would explain why Dark has dirty fighting, but also exceptions. It's the general encompass of dirty fighting, actual "dark energy" (or whatever you want to call it), the natural coldness of nature, etc..
Makes a lot more sense to me that way.
