The sound of metal, contacting with some unseen wall, resounded through the peaks and valleys of the Sinjoh range. The train had been broken, by a wall none could perceive. "What the..." Hans jumped from the back of his war machine, with no words for the anomaly that had just occurred.

He examined the invisible wall, as best as one can examine something they cannot see. "It looks like this is our stop" he said, beckoning for his comrades to similarly exit the iron snake. "But be on your guard. Anything that can stop Stahlos dead in his tracks is not something to be taken lightly."

The sound and the force was enough to cause whatever was in front of them to budge just a tad, the ground before them rumbling a little as whatever it was slowly moved to stand up, the illusion over it's body fading as it did so, turning around to face them, the hideous monster that stood before them was unlike any seen before in this world.

With a large yawn the beast quickly stood to stand up and face the ones who had rudely awakened it, the beast slowly standing taller and taller until it was staring down the very Steelix that woke it in the face.

It's face was expressionless at first but it soon turned into a look of pure hatred as it stared at the others, one arm raising up to the sky as a massive barrage of Rocks began raining down as if from another hole in reality.

The monster, for these was no other word to properly describe the creature, stood tall, towering over the three men, and even rearing up tall enough to stare Stahlos in the face. "Mein Gott..." was all Hans could say in the presence of such a monster. Fear threatened to overcome the Colonel, fear of a nameless horror from beyond this world. If ever there was proof that other worlds beyond this existed, then this monster before the three was the proof.

But fear is meant to be overcome, and when one is fighting for their life on the field of battle, there is little time to let fear take hold.

Skyward, the monster raise its arm, thick as an aged tree in diameter, as it called forth from the heavens a thundering blow of meteors upon Hans and his teammates. Around the three in a great circle did many of them strike, but few struck Stahlos as it stared down its new rival, their heavy blows doing little to damage the iron snake.

"Is that the best you can muster, beast?" Hans asked, defiant, letting bluster and boast hide his fear. "Is that all you can conjure, beast? Are we to fear your display? Stahlos, show this monster a true strength to be feared. Give it a taste of the earth's might."

With a great cry, Stahlos slammed the edge of its tail into the earth, hewing out a stone of great size, before throwing it at the opposing monster.

Mike had ducked out of the way of the incoming Meteor shower, just in time to avoid a direct hit. "What the hell IS that thing?! ...Jeff! We're gonna need some help over here first!" The duo of attacks flew at the wretched abomination, the beast almost beginning to look away before both attacks hit it, it's eyes flashing in a rage as it looked towards it's new opponents as another bombardment of rocks rained down upon all of them, the rocks raining down from the void hitting like bombs around and on them, the landscape around them shattering from the impacts flying everywhere.

Again did the monster call forth a wave of meteors, smashing like artillery shells against the frozen earth below. The slab of rock thrown by Stahlos had done little to damage this new foe, and in return, the rocks from the sky had done little to damage the iron serpent.

Defensively, it appeared that the two giants were evenly matched. But only one had the advantage of teammates to back it up.

"How the hell did that attack not damage it?" groused Hans, dismayed that Stahlos' well-placed attack had done little to harm the enemy. "Fine. If that doesn't work, then we'll just have to try something else! If the earth won't damage it, then you'll just have to ram it!"

Slowly, the iron segments of the serpent's body began to rotate, until they were a whirling dervish of iron, propelling forward the massive iron behemoth at breakneck speed.

The new noise of battle just beyond their sight was enough to mobilize the main defensive lines into action. The heavy guns, already pre-sighted to the main entrance were quickly loaded and manned, the heavy doors, reinforced with more modern technology, was sealed shut while the men took position on either side of it, taking cover behind the vast statues that flanked either side.

The next line of defense dug in around the entrance itself, men taking cover behind the remains of the pillars that had flanked the path leading upwards as well, using the cover of the rubble to hide their own stockpile of pokeballs and explosives, the height difference giving them the edge to fire over the lower entrance below.

The final group quickly manned their positions outside the ruins itself, the small trench line and grouping of sandbags providing them with enough cover to keep the line of fire from the above groups open even as they made ready to take the brunt of the enemy's first attack.

The remaining artillery to the rear took the call and began preparing for their own part in the operation, the mortar and rocket batteries quickly switching targets, the closer mortars taking position behind the temple itself while further to the rear the rocket batteries, thier bombardment of the distortion lower down on the mountain apparently having failed to achive anything instead turned their weapons on their newest group of enemies as they rearmed readying a group of rounds for almost anything that could be thrown at them.

The soldiers and officers worked in silence as they did this, few words were needed here, each of them knew what was at stake here.

The sounds of the clown beginning his dark ritual behind them and the sounds of combat and massive destruction ahead of them was enough to convince most of them that no matter the outcome, they were all going to die here.

Mike was dismayed that nothing seemed to be getting through yet... The monster was simply tanking things like they weren't there. "This thing's ridiculously tough... Jeff! Back to the original plan! Try to find a way around it!" He hoped Bakura and Colonel Lubeck would trust him and cover him long enough to explore that option... If not, there was going to be trouble. The Magnezone hesitated, but resumed the search for an alternate path after a moment. The trainer had his hand on a Poke Ball, ready to recall and make a switch if he had to; in the meantime, he himself was defenseless.

The rolling Iron snake's attack was blocked with one of the massive arms of the beast, the rocks continue to pour down as it looked towards each of them, it's massive bulk proving to be a problem in squeezing around for even the magnet pokemon.

Of blue it seem to gaze at even more so, the rocks continuing to make no distinction between targets as it vented it's rage to all evenly.

The fact that the enemy moved to block Stahlos' attack meant something. The other attacks that had been launched at it, it tanked and kept going, almost immune. But it blocked the iron snake's charge...

"Do that again!" Hans commanded of his serpent. Stahlos obeyed, revving up for another spinning attack before charging once more at the monster.

Following its trainer's dramatic gesture, the bird flew at the beast, the air temperature plummeting even further than before, atoms ceasing to move for a brief moment as it hit absolute zero.

There was no way around the beast's massive bulk for now. They'd simply have to smash through it if they wanted to progress. How were they going to beat something that didn't have a scratch on it, though? It was simply taking attacks like they were nothing when it wasn't simply tossing them aside... Not to mention it continued to rain Meteors on them all the while; the strikes themselves had missed, but each impact sent flak flying. Mike dropped to one knee himself, the damage being too much for him to remain on his feet. "..." There had to be a way around this fight, though the answer escaped him for the moment; at this rate, he was going to get beaten to death before he even threw a single attack. What was he waiting for?!

The first strike would be blocked with the other arm as the attacks kept raining down, the beast looking barely annoyed at the attempt, that is until the massive sheer freezing cold poured down upon it, freezing the entire monster solid causing a brief reprive on the meteor strike, giving the other a chance to search a bit longer.

For a few seconds the creature was immobile in it's icy prison, everything around it frozen as if in time, but then with a sudden tearing sound the creature seemed to shimmer and ripple before appearing again, looking no better or worse than before.

Nothing the three could do seemed to have any effect on the monster. However, with its terrible aim, there seemed to be very little it could do to the three. Sure, some of the meteors it flung at them were somewhat painful to bear, and some of the damage the three threw at it seemed to do more than the base nothing, but on the whole, the two sides were evenly matched.

However, time was likely on the monster's side. This creature, this otherworldly horror, was likely another diversion by the clown to buy time, to prepare for what was to come. Whatever this monster was being used as a stall for, it had to be of a magnitude equal to its own massive reserves of health. And that had Hans worried.

"Stahlos, keep hitting it. Ram it until the ramming sticks!"

Again, the whirling iron serpent dove towards the monster. Maybe this time it would land a hit. Maybe they could damage the creature this time. Maybe, if their luck would have it, they could even kill it.

This was turning into a long, drawn-out match on both sides. It was like watching bad sumo wrestling where neither side could properly gain leverage over the other and they were too fat to really hurt. "Hold on. If nothing's hurting this thing, then why are we still attacking?" That'd just burn out their energy so they'd be exhausted later. That said, there might be things that hurt it and he just didn't know... but so far the beast seemed invincible. If that was the case, why not just use that to conquer the planet? There had to be some weakness... Think, Mikey!

The rolling strike would fly closer and closer to the monster, the beast throwing out one arm to block it again but this time around mis-judging the distance, the attack would slam into the beast's gut, pushing it back a few inches as it's own bulk met the bulk of the Steel Snake... Perhaps the third member of their party had the right idea. This creature, it seemed to be less of a sentient being, and more of a reactionary force; only blocking or attacking when an attack was levied against it. A perfect, invulnerable, reactionary wall; that's what this creature was, wasn't it? No wonder the clown would deploy it as a barrier. The enemy would wear itself out fighting an enemy that couldn't be killed, long before they reached their true objective.

It was brilliant.

Hans gave no command to Stahlos; the iron serpent, without new orders, slithered listlessly around the creature, letting out the occasional roar.

"Perhaps this one has the right idea..." Hans said, eying the monster. "Let's see what happens if we don't attack."

The repeated meteor strikes had worn down Mike's endurance; he'd been put on the edge of collapse after the most recent volley. They weren't even direct hits, any of them, but the amount of splash damage they'd caused was enough. "Jeff... Hold your fire..." The Magnezone floated in front of his trainer, assuming a defensive position. He was ready to fire again, should that be necessary, but for the moment his position held. "If I'm right, we'll at least avoid getting beaten up worse. If I'm wrong..." He'd never make it to the final showdown, if the latter were true.

The attacks trailing off the beast itself seemed to settle as well, it's pace slowing as it began fading from view... for a moment it seemed it had worked but then... a growl of pain happened as the beast reappeared, the burning attack awakening it again.

The plan worked. When the trio stopped their attacks, the beast ceased to drop meteors upon them. For one brief moment, it looked like luck was back on their side...

Then the fire inflicted by Bakura's ghost began to burn the creature's hide, and it returned.

"Schieβe!" shouted Hans. "We almost had it, and you had to go and burn it."

Time seemed to stop for Hans. For but a moment, he analyzed the situation, where all possibilities made themselves bare before him. Running was out of the question, at least not while the monster was still present. And he doubted that they would be able to take the creature down without wearing themselves down beyond fighting condition before it was beaten. No, like it or not, there was only one option that now remained. In order to get the monster to leave, they had to heal it of its burns. They had to sacrifice one of their healing items in order to progress.

Time resumed, and Hans smirked. Knowing the clown, this had likely been the plan from the beginning. Either they would wear themselves to death fighting this unkillable monster, or they would figure out the secret too late, and be forced to use valuable resources in order to pass.

"Schieβe" said Hans again. "He's good. Damn good."

Turning to Mike, he shouted "We're going to have to use a healing item to get rid of its burns! As long as its burned, it's not going to leave!"

Mike had seen where this was going, and by a most fortunate chance he had turned out to be right. He'd expected to be wrong himself, but... In any case, it looked like they'd figured out the beast's secret. Now they just had to recover from their most recent blunder. "...I'm on it." Forced to hobble forward, Mike reached in his backpack, approaching the beast with a Full Restore in hand. "No clue whether this'll work on you, but... Here goes!" He was at least aware of where it was from previous appearances, even if it was currently invisible; to his knowledge it hadn't moved. If he was wrong, he was screwed. He'd just have to be right, wouldn't he?

Just another day in war.

Hopefully the plan would work, and the beast would cease its attacks when its burns were healed.

He wouldn't have the chance for a while yet. Once more the meteors struck, and unlike the previous volleys a direct hit had been scored this time. Mike froze for a moment from the impact, then slumped forward into the dirt and ice. He'd just barely managed to land on one side, but it was clear the last impact had knocked him out cold.

The sounds of fighting going silent was enough to alert the soldiers that Kefka's little trap had been stopped one way or another, with no way to be sure of the outcome the men kept waiting to be certain who had been the victor.

The recalling of the bird was all that the officer needed, the man quickly turning to the radio man who quickly moved to give the orders. Around him the safeties went off and the teams were readied, the traps set, and whatever support they had on hand was given the go ahead. With the artillery coming in shortly that left just their own amassed group.

The man knew it was now or never, the ones coming wouldn't allow them the chance to stand their ground and bog them down for as long as necessary, in a war of attrition he was certain he was going to win, he just had to keep them suppressed.

The addition of their newest opponent made the fight far more personal to him though, the thought of their short term commander leading the charge had caused their plans to shift greatly and his own personal scorn to lay directly upon him.

This was it; the opening salvo had begun. Down came the rockets, moaning like the souls of the damned as they blacked out the sky above their targets. The rain of death came, crashing into everything around it, earth, ice, and Stahlos. The iron giant had endured much in its days, and compared to the American Naval cannon-fire it had endured in the start of the Italian campaign in 1943, these rockets were nothing. Still, for "nothing" they sure packed a hell of a punch, and the beast roared with a mix of agony and rage, as its armor chipped away under the barrage, and it realized that it was being attacked by the weaponry of its "own side". But, pain or not, it had a job to do, and it would hold fast, protecting its master and his teammates until its dying breath if it was required. Much like those days in Italy, death now seemed a certainty to come.

Shells, shells bursting all around the trio, smashing the pristine icy landscape into a blasted mockery of its former beauty. Normal men would want for umbrellas in the rain, but there were few umbrellas that could save one from the rain of death that now descended.

Amidst the endless carnage, so loud it became almost impossible to hear one's own thoughts, Hans laughed. In the past, he had longed to witness firsthand the great battles of old, but now, as he was in the eye of the storm, he found that he no longer wished to see those great battles. Rather, he found himself wishing for home, a hot cup of coffee in his hand and his daughter's smile to brighten his day.

Hell. The only word capable of describing the battle at this moment. Hell. Fire and explosions surrounded everything, making visibility limited, breathing hard, and merely existing a painful and arduous task.

The incoming artillery barrage threatened to wipe out the entire team that was left. Mike himself was unable to evade; not that it mattered, the aim was good enough to finish him regardless. Jeff had been forced to fly in the way of an incoming rocket, taking a shot that would've otherwise hit Sophia. The Magnezone had had enough; he was too damaged to continue flying.

`Whaddya got in mind, Colonel?` The Gardevoir would need to use every bit of her brainpower to survive the fight, let alone win. She'd been busy formulating her own plan even as Lubeck had proposed his. Hmm... Maybe they could use that giant monster to their advantage. It'd need a team effort, but if they were quick they could pull it off.

As the Colonel was the only one in the party who spoke German or understood it, the others simply had his word that whatever he was saying had a chance to work. With Panzaeron diving into the fray and no other way to fly back over the target, Hans would have to pray that Blue could support a third person and a telepath long enough to get everyone into position.

Speed. That was the essence of this attack, as the iron condor dove into the fray, screeching like a demented banshee as it flung itself between soldier and emplacement. As best as it could, it would provide a distraction to the enemy, drawing their fire long enough for its master and his teammates to get into position. When that had been done, it screeched once more, flinging itself skyward, before diving straight at the intended target of attack- The sleeping body of the invincible monstrous wall, which now lay invisible in its slumber.

Their fire had been drawn, and their target had been marked. Speed had done its job. Now, it was up to luck to see the trio through.

The scout looked at them, "They're withdrawing..." before getting silenced by the officer, "No they're up to something."

He watched the antics as they began to group up, "I have a feeling on what, but we'll need to test them first, let the first line engage and get me the Mortars."

The first line, most of them close enough to see it, quickly targeted the bird the moment it appeared, pepping it it with a burst of machine gun fire towards the entire general area.

Ducking and diving and turning, Panzaeron made its way through the enemy crowds, screeching with every pass.

On the ground below, the soldiers let loose a volley from their machine guns, and a spray of green tracers filled the air with an eerie neon emerald. Many struck the target, some struck Panzaeron.

And then, the strangest thing happened. As the rain of green stopped, and the soldiers went to reload and change out barrels, Panzaeron made one more dive, and it began to speak.

Boy, for a bird, Panzaeron had a firm enough grasp on the tongue of its master to throw out some pretty coherent and nasty insults, to those that could understand its words, that is. It was really taunting those poor bastard soldiers good and proper now. I wonder if they'll step up their game and resort to using bigger weapons?

It wouldn't much of a chance to bellow out anything else, for as the soldiers changed barrels, the group barely even giving an opening to speak before the second part of the first line sent a volley of their own.

The insults however were enough that someone decided that the bird deserved a lesson in manners.

While one of the normal guards on the ground broke into a curse filled rant, another further up took aim with something far more potent.

The bird laughed, as best as it could, until it saw the soldier with the Panzerfaust take aim and fire. If you can imagine the eyes of a cartoon character as they realize something terrible is about to happen to them, then you can imagine Panzaeron's eyes as it watched the shaped explosive rocket towards it at breakneck speed. As the warhead hit Panzaeron's underbelly, it screeched in pain as the explosion of molten metal set alight one of its wings.

The various attacks from the gunners had naturally moved from the bird towards the other's positions during the fight, enough shots finally hitting to the point of awakening and angering the beast, which sent a blast of meteors back.

The team breathed a momentary sign of relief as the monster that blocked their path rained a shower of meteors down on the enemy. It seemed the beast had a good deal better aim against its employers, gouging out foot-wide pits of shrapnel to tear at the soldiers' flesh. Several direct hits were scored by the barrage, stunning one soldier and knocking another to the dirt. The remaining impacts made the surrounding terrain significantly more difficult, should reinforcements be coming. [They can still get up and shoot again, they just got knocked around a little.] '`Perfect! Now how long can we keep this little charade going?`' Sophia still needed quite a bit of time to charge her power, especially since she might need enough to simply march over to the soldiers' post with teammates in hand and beat them the old-fashioned way... to death.

Hans wanted to laugh as the beast pummeled the enemy soldiers with a terrible barrage of meteors. He wanted to let loose and fill the frozen air with mirth at the victory the soldiers had given the trio (minus their unconscious third man). But he did not, saddened as he was by the loss of good German lives, he held his laughter in. The survivors would no doubt try to get back up, which would lead to only more needless deaths.

Panzaeron returned, looking all the worse for the wear with a burnt wing, but spirits were otherwise rising amongst the trio. Their plan had worked, and it seemed that they would be on their way in short order, once the monster had returned to its slumber. A quick spritz of a burn healer, followed by another use of Roost by Panzaeron, and the iron bird was back to full health, ready to go again if need be.

"Don't make a move just yet" cautioned Hans. "Their survivors may still try to get up and return fire."

As the dust would clear it'd show the first line in complete disarray, sandbags toppled, guns smashed, people KOed and wounded, the losses were heavy but it was clear that already they were reforming them, the remaining soldiers in the trenches pushing their wounded aside as they began regrouping, several tossing out pokemon to make up for their destroyed weaponry.

The second line took it far better, most of them still too in cover to have been even noticed, though the Rocket launching soldier was given a full brunt of it, going down hard. The rest merely kept to cover as they waited for the first bombardment to halt.

"...." The officer gazed down with clenched fists, seeing the trap that had been sprung back on them, it wasn't good, with the first line taking losses and what's more being suppressed, it left them open for closing in.
"Scheiße."
He turned and looked at the radio man.
"Rauch! Ich will da draußen Rauch sehen."

The orders given he then turnd to another and quickly mouthed for one of the Elites to head down there and deal with it before pointing another soldier towards the temple, making it clear that they needed someone to take care of a rogue guard dog if they couldn't do it themselves.

`Got it. We'll just sit tight and wait for them to come to us.` If her calculations were correct, there would be a couple more rounds of incoming fire. Just enough time for Sophia to get her power stored, assuming nothing else came along to complicate that plan. Of course, something would; as such, she kept an eye on the gate behind the giant monster that was currently shielding them. Reaching for her trainer's belt, she wrapped it around herself before doing the same with his backpack. Mike wasn't conscious enough to use them any more, so why not? Using the smoke for cover the rest of the first line reformed, the remaining men now rounded out with pokemon instead. They still held the advantage but it was narrowing with each minute that passed.

The invisible monster was both a curse and a blessing, as bad as it did, there was worse they coudl have faced and with the knowledge of just how it acts fresh in their mind, the officer passed word to the mortars to drop a few gifts right on top of it, knowing that the beast would be unable to tell who attacked it from such a distance.

If it rose to the bait or not either way it bought them time to finish regrouping and prepare for the next general attack, this time keen to hit them quickly and tie the beast up with fighting it's own shadow... or it's own new masters.

The beast roared its earth-shattering cry, loosing meteors down on everything in sight. With tremendous force they impacted the earth, tearing asunder ice, rock, metal, flesh. Stone and fire rained down from the heavens, leaving massive scars in their wake and setting the earth alight. Even the mighty, nigh-impenetrable Stahlos, who had moved to protect its master and his teammates, was beaten down by the stone rain. Tearing shards of metal from his iron hide, they smashed into the serpent, and the raining iron shrapnel that fell from its back only served to damage further the trio.

The German soldiers, on the other hand, would not be so lucky. Without the aid of a massive war beast to protect them, they found their emplacements smashed to bits by the falling meteors. The survivors from the first onslaught, and the dead as well, were once again bowled over by great mighty rocks, smashing through their ranks as though they were bowling pins, and the meteors the ball of a great sky god. Whether any more survived, or if the at last fell, would be left to the will of the unseen hand of fate.

The strike slowed, finally ceasing as the beast once more returned to slumber, and in its wake was left a ruin of all things. A great many stones had smote much, and what remained was a broken mockery of what it had once been.

On his knees, Hans struggled to shake the rubble from his back, scanning nearby for signs that his comrades had survived as well. He coughed, and his gesture was mimicked by the mighty Stahlos, alive but for the grace of God. He glanced to the side of the enemy, surveying the carnage the beast's strike had caused, and lamenting the needless loss of life it had wrought.

"Scheiβe" he muttered, easing himself to a stand as the last clumps of rubble fell from his back. "That was close..."

The dust would clear showing a scene of devestation in a circle around them, the majority of the first line was completely wiped out, the trenches and defenses completely pounded into dust, along with several of the forces gathered along the line, the survivors pulled back to the second line to regroup using the remaining trenches, digging in again around the temple exterior while they waited for the next attack.

Of course what would make things worse would be the sudden secondary explosions coming from just ahead of them as several of the traps that had been set in place went off in the process, a massive spray of burning fuel erupting ahead of them to coat the ground and cliff side ahead of them with thick burning oil.

Further to the rear the main officer in charge eyeballed the devastation taking stock of the loses before deciding it was time to play his trump card.

He gave the order to ready the main and secondary guns and instructed the artillery to drop some things behind them.

As the battle lines shifted and the smoke from the fires finally cleared, the group could make out a force of soldiers arrayed against them along the temple itself, several were wounded, some looked a little but others gave no sense of their discomfort or strife behind their masks as they quickly begin digging in again around the rubble.

With the distance between them now, it was clear that the trick wouldn't work again.

The enemy would make no movements, wise enough not to put themselves at risk for nothing. There would be another delay as a series of rockets were fired towards them, these ones fortunately overshooting greatly. The distraction was enough for the heavy guns to be moved to aim towards them though, the enemy bracing themselves for combat.

The skillful use of Barriers helped them close the distance some, but it was still slow going, the one fortunate thing was that by following the same path, whatever traps they could have run into had already been triggered.

Their pace would be steady as they drew nearer, the familiar sound of explosions ahead of them clearly indicating that the battle had begun.

The Colonel brought his binoculars to his face, peering out at the man. From his vantage point, he now had a clear view of the man waving the coat. It wasn't a coat belonging to any of the dead soldiers, that much Hans was certain of. The M40 greatcoats worn by the soldiers were solid field-grey in colour, but the coat being waved by the man was black; similar to an M32, but without the trappings that would mark it as such. Furthermore, the coat was far too small for even the shortest of soldiers, and the waist was cut unusually thin for a male...

The taunt... It was strange, to taunt a man with that kind of question, but combined with the coat, it was beginning to make sense...

The realization struck the Colonel like a train engine, and his face changed in an instant, his cocky demeanor of moments ago becoming one of dread and hatred.

Hans hopped on Panzaeron's backside. "Cover me" he said, kicking the bird off.

Over the invisible barrier of flesh and magic he soared, landing the bird just a few feet from the soldier. Silently, he dismounted, curling the fingers of his right hand into a fist as he approached the figure.

Reeling back his arm, Hans swung his fist as hard as he could.

The effect on the man had been even better than expected, the fury of the colonel had been the opening the rest had needed, with their cover broken the battle was finally joined.

The sudden swiftness of his attack however was too much for even the most alert of people to respond, the soldier in question barely having the chance to throw the coat behind him and come up into a defensive stance, his reflexes honed at a speed that would counter the Colonel's own punch with one of his own, the man attempting to knock the man backwards onto the ground below them.

The bird itself would get similar treatment, a Murkrow rising up from behind one of the pillars to deliver a flanking jab as another soldier opened fire upon it at close range.

His reckless rage barely brought the others enough time to send their two pokemon from the cover of the invisible monster, a pair of soldiers opening on the ghost as it appeared while another tossed out what looked like a Houndour to charge the Coffin pokemon.

The enemy delivered a good punch, one that Hans, blinded by rage, was unable to see in time to block. It connected, sending a wave of pain through the Colonel's jaw. All pretenses of civility were dropped, now, blood was to be spilled.

From his side, Hans let fly another sphere, calling forth a new minion. In a flash, there stood a mantis-like creature of roughly human proportion. Its slender arms terminated in massive lobster claws, giving the silhouette of its arms a distinctly Popeye-inspired shape. With these gifts, as was tradition, came a card; a simple affair compared to the luxurious gifts. Simple, and perhaps a touch childish, the card showed that the executive had a sense of humor despite rumors to the contrary. "You electrify me" it read, with only Archer's signature added underneath.

I don't think you understand how important that can be. You start with something small and unassuming, and you get good at it until you're the best at it. At that point, you become indispensable.

You start by chasing strays back into their pens, and you move up the ladder, bit by bit, until you're the guy doling out 'mons to the new recruits. Your selections, at that level, would literally determine which new recruits succeeded and which ones failed. Newbies would seek to impress you in the hopes that you'd give them slightly better pokemon than their peers.

The ghost would find it's path suddenly becoming difficult as it was noticed, several men pointing out the intruder long enough to throw a wall of lead between him and the colonel himself, a series of grim grins on their faces as they kept the ghost suppressed.

The Colonel's forces were faring little better, the mantis was met by claws as another Dark type arose against it, the Weavile's claws zipping around it to strike from behind, it's movements suddenly joined in by the surrounding soldiers who quickly attempted to deliver their own blows into the distracted insect before it could recover.

The Colonel himself wouldn't be forgotten though the soldier he had previous fought following up his first blow with a lunging strike even while the third line joined in their own attacks, the heavy guns in the background quickly taking aim. The Murkrow swerved to dodge the peck before taking flight to evade another attack, still mostly out matched.

It wouldn't be alone though, it seemed that the flight of the bird was enough to encourage the others to send their own fliers, a pair of Golbats taking flight and circling it, one fittin it with a death glare that could strip paint while the other came in for a lunging bite.

The Houndour tried to shake off the wrapping before suffering from the curse, stumbling back a little before lunging forwards again to deliver a similar attack from before, the rest of the soldiers now keeping their distance as they took aim.

Of the force back in the rear the heavy guns were soon lowered and aimed.

The gunfire was easily enough to suppress Gaspar's approach, the Gengar being unable to properly phase in order to avoid being injured by such things. A direct attack wasn't recommended, as tired as he was, but maybe he could still turn them on each other... A Confuse Ray was directed at the soldiers blocking his path, attempting to clear the way for backup to join the fray.

Scherox's punch could, on a good day, break through a foot of steel-reinforced concrete and keep going. Luckily for the intended target, the strike went too low, instead smashing into the ground, shattering the frozen rock and sending rubble flying several feet from the impact. Behind it ducked a new target, a Weavile that slashed at the mantis' exposed backside, before retreating to allow its firearms-wielding comrades to follow up with a barrage of 8mm bullets. The steel-cased bullets, though powerful, were no match against Scherox's iron hide, and many simply bounced harmlessly off. Luck was on the creature's side today, as several of them had come dangerously close to breaking through the joints, where the armor was weaker. Turning to face the enemy Weavile, Scherox let fly a powerful strike, intending to break the body of its dark and icy foe in one strike.

A bird flew in, low, to peck at Hans, as birds with no regard for humans often do. The strikes hurt, and several of them drew blood, but the Colonel, blind with rage, cared little for the assault. Reaching to his right thigh, he drew his compact 9mm pistol, firing at the annoying winged nuisance.

Last of the three, Panzaeron, was faring only marginally better against the duo of poisonous bats that had descended upon the iron bird. The bats bit, their small teeth dealing minimal damage to the iron armored condor. Screeching, Panzaeron launched another strike against the nearest source of its discomfort, taking flight at the closer bat with a corkscrewing aerial surge.

The confuse way was ducked by one of the soldiers who went down to reload, the other tossing out a Graveler to hold the line while he also reloaded, the pokemon suddenly rolling towards the ghost at high speed, kicking up dust behind it as they fought to keep the colonel cut off.

The Colonel's group was doing a little better though, the sudden counterstrike against the Weavile from the Bug sent it flying, the remaining soldiers around it simply lobbing a pair of grenades in it's direction as they fell back to their defenses, more pokemon rushing to close the gap around it.

The Murkrow took a few hits from the pistol, the wounds causing enough damage to send the thing into wisely fleeing the scene, but it was enough for the first soldier to draw close and lunge in with a flying tackle of his own, heedless of the Colonel's own pistol.

The bird was continuing to face a barrage of strikes from multiple angles, the attackers forcing it away from the ground slowly simply due to the constant mostly ineffective attacks, the timely drill peck though was enough to send one of the bats down for the count, the other simply joining in on a bite of it's own, it's Dark type attacks pushing through the steel protection.

The Waterfall scored a direct hit on the already curse weakened dark type, another Rushing to mind the gap, the fact that it was a water ground though seemed to be proving to be some trouble for them, the ones thrown out being a Winggull and another Houndour both which fired with their own attacks.

The rest of the third line kept to their positions, the officer in charge focusing his gaze on the main group, making sure to keep the invisible beast marked.

As was said before, Scherox's punch can smash holes through steel and concrete, and the flesh of the enemy Weavile, once exposed, was no different. The super-powered strike connected, and the soft, fleshy ice weasel was sent flying, most likely with severe internal organ damage. But, concentrating on the creature, the mantis neglected to watch its flank, leaving it exposed to the pair of thrown stick grenades. Erupting with concussive waves of force, they knocked the iron insect down to the ground amidst a cloud of rubble and smoke. But as the smoke cleared, the soldiers could do nothing but stare as Scherox, back on its feet, waded through the smoke with a purposeful stride. Leaping at the soldiers, the emerald fury prepared its "fists" for another strike on their position.

Shooting a bird with a 9mm handgun was not something Hans ever imagined having to do, but his aim with a pistol had not diminished, and the bird was sent retreating with several bleeding bullet holes.

*Click* went the slide, locking rearward to indicate that Hans had fired the entirety of his pistol's magazine. Down went his hand, reaching to reload, when another soldier took that moment to lunge, his tackle sending the Colonel, with the enemy atop him, to the ground. Out of his hands flew the sidearm, clattering against the ground just out of arm's reach. A punch, delivered to the nearest available surface of the enemy, would have to do in the absence of the handgun.

Bats. Bats, bats, bats. If there was one thing that Panzaeron would grow to hate, it would be bats. They were obnoxious, biting down with a surprising amount of force, before retreating to let another wave of bats repeat the process. Another corkscrewing strike would have to suffice, as there was little else the iron bird could do to get the damn bats out of its feathers.

The stone edge went wide as it impacted against a bit of rubble, forcing the two pokemon aside as they moved to attack again, the soldiers now coming back up with their guns as they began looking for targets, giving suppression fire towards Bakura and the others as the two attackers tried one more round against the water type.

The ghost withdrew under fire again the rolling pokemon following behind as it began rolling faster and faster towards the rest of them, the men behind it readying pokeballs of their own for whoever else was going to be sent out.

The fist hit Cloth with the force of a hammer, the soldier grunting from the power of the attack, but despite the immense pain and damage he didn't crumple... somehow, instead he merely grinned and countered with an upwards kick to force the pokemon to let go of him, the others kept a good circle around it, forcing it into a pin where an attack against one would open a flank to another, they didn't look like they had the strength to hurt it but it certainally looked like they were stalling until something that could did.

The Punch knocked the soldier back, his helmet flying loose through his Mask as he countered with another of his own, attempting to grab and toss the Colonel even further into the melee that was developing.

The Bats were soon driven off by Panzaeron's efforts but distraction was enough for Panzaeron to end up in their sights, the gunners grimly taking aim as they awaited the commands... the officer looking down at the battle below them before shouting.
"Feuer öffnen!"

The boom of the 88mm Cannon echoed through out the open valley as the shell was launched directly towards the bird already the gunners locking on to another target as the next shell was slammed into the chamber

Talk about throwin a cut to the sailors who was always at the café. Talk about startin somethin. We never did. Knew we couldn’t dust off the old uni’s sittin as they was unused.

And if you've ever smelled roast pecca berries warmin on a fire, you can imagine the look on this kids face when he gets whiff. I thought he'd die on the spot.

Raticate was prety wary of the kid, but didn't make much of an introduction with the food on the table. Crobat gave him a once over, landed on hi ed for good measure, then left im alone. He ate half a truck load, small as he was. And he started talking too.

"Man, I haven't had sauce like this in... I don't know."
"Well Candy the kid must be hungrier then I thought. Don't gimmee that eye. It's pretty good. Really good honey. Thanks." She smiled then, mousy hair fallin on her cheeks. The look in her eyes when she wraps her lips around a fork of pasta with pecca berry sauce, that glint a happiness. A man could die for a lot less than that.

"I got friends in Celadon. Probably wonderin about me. I need you to give em a message, from me. And I don't need to get roped into anotha gig. You get me? You go, you get a few meals and a Pokemon. Whatdya say?"

He looked down for a long time. He looked at me. Even think he tried to look through his own head and back at Candy. But he didn't have two choices. "Yeah, I'll do it."

Candy smiled when we got back. It was a couple days after that,when the kid left. I packed a bag for him, with Wendy's cooking on the top and an old spare uniform on the bottom. He wouldn't find it for a few days, but when he did. I like to think he'd wear it. I like to think he got that note to Wendy. I like to think she ready it, scrawled as it was in what I can occasionally pass off as handwriting.

Now i don't know for sure if he ever got there, and I don't think I'll eva know. But if everthin turns out the wat it should, there's a grunt somewhere in the mess with a snubull after my name. Maybe, he'll be the grunt we all want to be. just another guy among friends. Surviving, laughing, telling stories that never happened about places he's never been. If it was lucky, it would be flying again by year's end, but for now, the bird had been taken out of the fight.

Hans, similarly on the wrong side of the 88, was momentarily taken out of the battle as his concentration was drawn to the whistling projectile. In that moment, his opponent took the opportunity to attack, knocking the Colonel to the ground with a strong blow. This was it, wasn't it? Hans was going to die here. He would die, and in death he would be reunited with his wife and daughter. But he would not let himself die without a fight. The missed attack would send the steel bug colliding with two of the more uninjured soldiers, the two of them using their combined strength to soften the attack and force it back into the line. The wounded man took the time to bow out of the fight with escort, the remainder turning to the now nearly defeated enemy to make certain that it was no longer a threat to them.

The sight and sounds of destruction as the round impacted the bird caused some of the still unoccupied soldiers to look up from their grim efforts to watch. The commander gazing as the crippled Steel bird was sent smashing into the cliffside across the battlefield, with one target out of the way that only left the rest and whatever new threat that could appear to deal with.

The gunners didn't pause one moment to let their enemy recover, the loaders quickly slamming another round in a smooth and well practiced motion as the targetter quickly began searching for another to taste their ire.

The newest opponents however would prove more difficult to hit, with the Blaziken caught up in a close melee with their fighters and the Quagsire looking to be a less than fitting target the men would instead turn to the invisible beast as they prepared for their next orders.

The Colonel's attack would mostly impact with one of the soldier's coat, the man falling backwards in a downright primal scream that would shake any lesser man, the distraction only gave him a moment of hesitation by the remaining enemies, the rest of the second line forcing themselves to disengage to deal with their comrade who was now rolling along the stone floor in either agonry or rage. Again the shot would go wide, the two pokemon continuing to constantly dodge the flying shards of rock as the trainers looked on, continuing their efforts to keep the trainer from recalling or sending any more pokemon out as they burned through their stocks of ammunition. Things were looking rather grim for the teams all around; only two active 'mons were even up and running on Mike's team, and both of them were busy as hell.

Sophia still had her Teleport energy fully charged; given the Steelix's urgency, she'd need it. `All right, big guy, I'll get you over there.` Turning back toward her recently-refreshed companion, she had only one question. `You going to be all right here?` She waited only for the reply before placing a hand on the giant metal snake, warping both of them directly into the middle of combat.

The Colonel's orders however interrupted them, the swipe of the beast's tail knocking the closest ones backwards into the third line as if they were mere toys to the monster, the men of the third line looked back towards the snake and it's master before calling their own pokemon to fill the gaps a pair of Machoke dropping down to deliver a pair of blows even as the houndoom from early let out a blast of flame towards the Steel snake.

From above the gunners merely turned their weapon towards the new target, it's closeness and their previous efforts allowing them the chance to line the shot up perfectly, in another split second another boom sounded throughout the mountain as the high powered shell was launched to impact with the back of the steel beast's head, the men eager to finally put the already weakened pokemon it down where it was.

The important news is that it seemed now that the enemy was already down to it's main forces.
If they held the line a little more the trump card and the reserves would inevitably grind them into dust. Of course there was always the chance of something going wrong and for that he decided that it was time to ready the trump card, especially if that snake decided to prove to be more trouble than it was worth.

Samus had completely overshot once again, the Blaziken stuck in the air for several seconds. Another punch thrown too soon... She'd have to get her timing back, and fast. That Graveler didn't seem to have any trouble with such things, being a crack shot with that rock; the impact into the dirt and ice was immediate. *Not bad... but it's been a while since I've had a good fight. I'm just getting warmed up!* Flinging a hand into the dirt, the Blaziken had generated an Earthquake under her feet. With any luck, she'd sink that Graveler in one shot. If she did it wrong, though, she'd end up causing far more collateral damage than could be spared.

Sophia was even worse off, the Gardevoir taking most of the gunfire directly. It was funny how that worked... She wouldn't normally have been hit this hard by gunfire, so why did it hurt so much now? In any case, she slumped to the dirt, no longer in any condition to fight back. If she could just get to the backpack she still had, she could get herself back in... but she'd have to work fast. [Evens she gets herself a Max Revive right away, odds she's delayed a turn.]

Swift came another projectile from the 88, striking Stahlos in the head with a terrific "CLANG" of metal against metal. Unlike Panzaeron, whose armor was light and weak, the iron snake's thick plating was heavy and strong, stronger even than the armor of a Tiger at "mealtime". The shell, scourge of the battlefield when it made its debut, bounced off the behemoth without leaving so much as a dent.

This is not to say that it was ineffective, no, only that it did not cause any penetrative damage. The force of the high-velocity projectile knocked Stahlos to the ground, where it was made easy prey of the three enemies that now had it in their sights. Swiftly, the three attacked, and their combined attacks, each super effective in their own right, at last brought down the mighty beast.

A simple flick of the Ferrothorn's iron-barbed tendril sent a wave of toxic sludge hurtling towards the first of two musclemen.

"Armored infantry support", as Hans called the second of three, was a quadrupedal monster roughly equivalent in size to a medium-sized van. Coloured in German grey, with a large silver X at the fore of its face.

Using its four powerful legs, Metagross leaped towards the second of two musclemen, emanating a strange purple energy from the silver X on its face.

On its hind legs, it could best be described as a living mountain, both in size and colouration. Even on all fours, it was as massive as a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" locomotive. Three horns adorned its helmeted face, and rows of razor-sharp teeth lined its strong jaws. The scales of its body were a charcoal-grey colour, and their appearance was reminiscent of living stone stretched over sinew and muscle. With a great crash, the mountainous behemoth slammed into the ground, taking a quadrupedal stance as it gave a mighty roar.

"Stolloss, break the Houndoom."

Another mighty roar did the creature give, before charging at the devil dog with the strength of a jet engine taking off.

The earthquake attack was muscled through though the effects were enough to disrupt it's aim a little, the monster coming to a stop again as it's trainers quickly worked to stand again after the brief shake up. The thing would pause in place for a moment before launching itself towards the Bird again, this time on another slow and steady roll.

The sudden KO of the massive steel snake got another call out from the officer as he looked back at the gunners, "Kritischer Treffer."

The brief lull in defeated enemies didn't last long before the colonel's newest partners were thrown out, the three massive steel beasts being enough to once again force a change of plans.

The three attacking pokemon were barely caught off guard by the sudden strikes, the first Machoke taking the poison attack without comment before closing in for a wind up hit, caring little of the helmet and barbs as it delivered a massive punch to the Ferrothorn.

The second Machoke would move to dodge the attack but fail in the way, the beast falling back in pain before lunging back towards it eager to avenge it's damage.

The Houndoom though barely had a chance to even let out a Howl of pain before it was sent flying by the head smashing attack, it's trainer recalling the crippled beast before it'd even hit the ground.

The remaining soldiers would simply stare at the steel types and realizing that their firepower would be nothing against the massive steel beast standing before them went for other options.

The few men left hurling a pair of stick grenades down the line towards the largest target.

The newest group could now nearly see the entire battle from their vantage point, the cover of the entrance to the still providing them with enough cover from being directly spotted, though it was clear that even in the midst of the action the enemy wasn't going to be hard to sneak up on.

On the roof top the heavy cannon was once again reloading, the officer in charge looking down at the Colonel's newest attackers and reaching for his own pokeballs and looking towards the right, it looks like it was time to put an end to this.

They always think they can take the pain, until the pain actually hits. Sure, the Machoke's punch may have left Tentantel confused and badly bruised, but the muscle'mon would be left with a bloody, possibly broken hand from trying to punch through several layers of steel spikes. On top of which, the barbed sphere's last attack had left it poisoned, so that's another layer of damage being heaped on.

"Now, poison the other one" said Hans, not sure if the attack would connect this time. Tentantel was spinning erratically, as the Machoke's last attack had left it a confused mess.

Stolloss had delivered retribution to one of the three enemies responsible for Stahlos' fall, and with another mighty cry it turned towards the second of the two Machoke, preparing to deliver another blow, when its attention was drawn by a group of men flinging their stick grenades.

Bad idea. Really, really bad idea.

The concussive explosions were nowhere near enough to damage the war beast, but now its gaze was locked on the idiotic soldiers. Another roar it loosed, before rearing to charge again.

The double Earthquake had been enough to stop the Graveler in its tracks. Good thing, too; if that fight had gone on much longer there would've been serious trouble.

The break in the soldiers' onslaught gave two Pokemon the break they needed. Samus rushed the downed Graveler, the Blaziken seizing its arms before leaping into the air. She was going directly for the crowd of soldiers, swinging the Graveler as though it were some sort of hammer. If she could take out the trainers, their Pokemon would be little trouble. [This maneuver works almost like Power Whip, except it's Rock instead of Grass.]

Sophia was struggling to get medical attention for herself; the Gardevoir was barely able to move after those gunshots. She had one hand on a Max Revive... Could she use it in time to avoid another barrage of bullets? [Evens says yes, odds says no.]

Mike was unconscious off to the side, comparatively less beaten up than the Executive was, which would probably explain why he didn't want to take another attack from the now sleeping beast.

With the damage done to the first the poisoned and now badly wounded Machoke would switch hands before going after a far better target, the wounded attacker turning to strike at the Metagross instead with it's still one good hand delivering a karate chop.

The second one took advantage of the other's attack to duck under the blow and went after the rampaging Stolloss, aiming to deliver a strike to it's back as it attempted to chase down the soldiers.

The two soldiers in question took one look at the massive steel beast charging towards, the two men waiting until the last second before rapidly diving to either side of the beast, using their distraction to drive the beast away from the center of the fight.
After a split second of seeing it pass the two soldiers would come up for air again, sighing in relief before turning to stare at the colonel as if to silently ask "What have you been feeding that thing?"

They weren't allowed to wait for long though, as the sudden high flying impact of the Graveler soon bowled the first one over before colliding with another group that was already preparing to send their own out to reinforce.

The chaos would leave only one pokemon being sent out, a Sawk which would turn from group of mostly KOed soldiers to the Blaizken, it's eyes narrowing as it glared down at it before rushing forwards to deliver a Karate Chop of it's own.

The second soldier would fare a little better, that is until he realized he was now having to face down the Ferrothorn mostly by himself now that the rest of the line was either falling back or trying to send out pokemon of their own, with that thought in mind he quickly primed a second grenade while he searched his surroundings for something with a little more fitting amount of fire power.

Thankfully throughout this all Sophia was mostly ignored in the fog of war... for now.
