A better allegory would be Cell.
He changes form, or 'evolves', by absorbing teenage robot cunts. This is what a regular evolution is like. It's total, and it's permanent.
But a Mega Evolution is a temporary and partial push further. That's why it doesn't look too different, just has additional features added to the existing Pokémon, not a whole new form change.
A Super Saiyan is a Mega Evolution. It's a temporary and arguably subliminal change. And it can be turned on and off at will. And the only difference is the hair, eyes, and unethical increase in power.
Does that make any sense?
