Hey guys, I have a technical question. I bought a 3DS XL from my friend so I could play Pokémon, but now he's getting a N3DS and wants his Nintendo ID back.

What happens to the downloaded games on the XL when he does? Can I keep my Pokémon save data safe and format the SD card, to allow me to make my own Nintendo ID?

It will transfer all downloaded data. If you play on cartridge, just redownload the updates and refill out your friend list. Make sure you move everything out of bank though, or just transfer from his ds to your cartridge to your ds afterwards

So, when he activates his N3DS and sets up his ID, it'll override mine? Is the Pokémon save data on the cart?

Essentially, how can I set up my own ID and keep my Pokémon save intact. I have OR on cart.

So the core save data, like the caught Pokémon, are on the cart? I can just factory reset the SD card and the cart will retain my progress?

If he wants to use the same NNID he'll have to do a system transfer, it doesn't allow you to have multiple 3DS on the same account. If he just picks something else, you're fine. If he wants the system transfer, you'll lose anything that's downloaded to the SD card. For Pokémon that's only battle videos and whatever you store in bank, but you can either just move everything to your game, or if you don't have space, dump your game into bank after the transfer when you redownload it and then take stuff from his bank on to your cartridge (repeat as necessary if you have a lot of stuff). With most games in physical cartridge, you won't lose a single thing other than updates to the game (those are stored on the SD card), which you can redownload.

As long as you played on physical carts, all data will be saved there. If you play digital games the data will be saved on your SD card, wich can be backed-up somewhere in the settings.

Don't reset the SD card, it will explain what to do in the system transfer. If he doesn't want the downloaded stuff but just the NNID, I think there's a way to remove it from just your system

That would give him the DL games and the right to download them, and leave me with my cart saved data (which is all I want) and an empty 3DS. then I can just do some kind of factory reset thing to set up a new NNID for myself, in my name.
